You work for the Guardian or the Economist. Your Editor in Chief has asked you to write an editorial on one of the following important political debates (please see the list below).
An editorial (or op-ed) is a short piece in which the author expresses an opinion on an important or timely topic in politics. As the audience is the wider public, the writing style should be sharp, clear and accessible to the average reader. The editorial usually makes an important claim and it is supported by evidence or arguments to convince readers or to back readers who already share the author’s view.

(TOPIC: Is it time, for the NHS, to be privatised?)
The National Health Service (NHS) was established by the Labour Government in 1948, which brought several hospitals, pharmaceuticals, dentists, nurses and clinicians to provide free healthcare services at multiple centre points. Primarily funded from the taxation process, NHS has been the hot topic of debate over the privatisation of the service with some arguing that it would be better managed through a private entity. Yet the NHS of the UK was declared the best among the healthcare systems of 10 countries including Australia, Germany, France, Germany and the US to name a few. Notably, as stated by Krachler (2015), the US follows an insurance-based healthcare system run by privately held firms. It was ranked the top spot for its efficiency, effectiveness, safety provisions and reduced costs. Its scale is itself enough to justify its non-privatisation as the world’s fifth largest employer with employees from different type of institutions and England’s largest public domain system so far (Grin, 2016).
The NHS with its incorporation brought together critical components pertaining to the healthcare system. According to Torchia et al. (2015), privatisation of an institution of such a magnanimity is sure to create absolute monopoly in the system. This would ultimately result in the exploitation of the beneficiaries since firms would focus on profitability instead of efficient services, which will eventually lead to deterioration of these services. In extension to this argument, Squires and Anderson (2015) argued that the beneficiaries would lose their power to hold the government accountable for any shortcoming in the system, a right that would be void because private firms do not represent the general public interest but they are focussed on generating revenues for their stakeholders.
