The paper analyzed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
compliance and electronic health records. The protected health information is often sought out in
the datasets primarily for the de-identification before various researchers are allowed to share
this dataset publicly. When the researchers remove this protected health information from
various datasets they do so in an attempt towards preserving the privacy for various research
participants. The Electronic health records are the way to the future. While the human genome
project is a successful venture, there are chances that the information recorded in this project
would be needed by doctors in the future.

Introduction
The paper discusses and analyzes the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) compliance and electronic health records. For improving the efficiency as well as
effectiveness of the nation’s health care system, the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, primarily included Administrative
Simplification provisions that required the Department of Health and the Human Services (HHS)
towards adopting national standards for the electronic health care transactions as well as code
sets, unique health identifiers, along with security (Blumenthal, 2010). The Congress at the same
time recognized that the advances in the electronic technology could primarily erode the privacy
of the health information.
