Studies on smoking and the preventive measures taken to reduce the smoking prevalence in Barking and Dagenham
Introduction
Worldwide the major health problem is Smoking (Hurd, 2000). This is One of the most prominent lifestyle factors intervening the human health and well-being. The tobacco industry is the successful economic enterprise and it was understood that nearly 3 million deaths across the world are because of consumption of Tobacco(Warner, 2005). The highest mortality rate of adult smokers is high in Britain(Doll et al., 2004). The i
eversible health disorders associated with the smoking are lung cancer, heart diseases, inflammatory disease, pulmonary disorders and many (Hurd, 2000). Barking and Dagenham is the most socioeconomically deprived states in the UK with highest number of obese people and smokers and these are the major concerns leading to shorter life-span because of associated health disorders. The factors associated with increased Smoking are low pricing, easy availability, advertising, fun, stress, etc (Hurd, 2000). It was also reported that the nonsmokers who are exposed to the smoking for longer have increased risk of developing lung cancer, effects on the development both mentally and physically. To decrease the smoking prevalence the government has introduced many polices and preventive measures to decrease the cigarette consumptions among the adults to improve the quality of life (Sharma).
Main Body
The number of deaths because of smoking constitutes one third of the total number of deaths in the UK (Peto et al., 1996). Researches has reported that the cu
ent smoking prevalence (%) in Barking and Dagenham is 37% and the percentage of the Ex-smokers is 27 % (Twigg et al., 2004). Hence, the government has introduced health policies to meet the health targets of the nation strategy to decrease the consumption of the smoking and in addition it counteracts with the economy and advertising because the tobacco industry is one of the successful industries generating huge income. Decreased price of the cigarettes resulted in the increased smoking rates among 15-16-year-old children (Tamson et al., 2021).
Both smoking and passive smoking is one of the established factors for the risk of heart diseases (Vardavas and Panagiotakos, 2009). Because of various policies the smoking prevalence is decreased but this decrease is less prevalent among the families who are under the below poverty line. The only way to protect the non-smoker is to stay in a smoke free zone (Health, 2017). The WHO -FCTC has implemented smoke-free laws in more than 170 countries (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
Some of the smoking preventive policies introduced to minimize the tobacco consumption were shown below:
1. Pricing/ taxation-It was observed that with increase in tobacco prices reduced the % of smoking and this decrease is because of quitting tobacco by teenagers and poor families (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
2. Restrictions- restrictions on tobacco consumption limited the access to the adolescent, ban in public places reduced the passive smoking and in UK age based restriction for purchasing the tobacco is implemented .the age limit for the purchase of UK is 18 years (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
3. Labelling: this is one of the preventive measures where the pictorial warning represents the health consequences of smoking  on the pack which creates awareness among the individuals (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
4. Advertising:  it was also understood that advertising is the most prevalent factor for the increase in tobacco consumption by adolescents. Hence, implementation of advertisement ban will reduce the tobacco consumption (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
5. Media campaigns: mass media campaign to create the awareness on quitting smoking May reduce the teenagers consumption of tobacco (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
6. Restrictions: implementation of smoke free policies at the workplaces will reduce the tobacco consumption as well as the exposure to smoke by the non- smoker will also decrease and in addition it promotes healthy lifestyle (Jørgensen et al., 2013).
It was experimentally proved that the impact of implementation of the UK tobacco control policies is highly effective and there is a decrease in the tobacco consumption.
Models approached by the Barking and Dagenham to reduce the smoking prevalence:
Besides policies various models were developed to study the smoking prevalence and all these studies depend on various factors like geographical, socioeconomic status, behavioural and genetics. (Kaplan and Keil, 1993) The types of the treatments will vary based on the smokers characteristics (at both individual and cultural level), effectiveness, cost, intensity and difficulty.
The individuals in Barking and Dagenham are suffering from various diseases like cancer, heart diseases and pulmonary diseases in comparison with the other parts of the UK (Wagner, 1965). This place is the 5th highest place with smokers in London and the smoking prevalence was 20.4%, which  approximates to 35,337 smokers only in barking and Dagenham with various health inequalities. Hence, to overcome the above problems Tobacco Control plan which is being monitored by the Local Tobacco Control Alliance was implemented (Amos et al., 2011). The priorities in this plan...
