Reporting and Responding
The case study reports about 42 year old woman named De
ie. She has a history of asthma with normal ideal body mass index i.e. 28 according to her age group. De
ie is a single mother with three children with no strong financial background. In her daily wages, she was able to manage her family’s major expenses and save a little. But due to a natural calamity resulting in drought, her services are affected and she is paid less due to money problem resulting from drought in the area. Due to this, she is now able to pay only the rent and buy basic food items. In last year, she was struck with influenza but was able to recover with the administration of fluvax (medication against influenza virus). Recently, she has been detected with type 2 diabetes where patient develops insulin resistance due to the destruction in β-islet cells of pancreas.
The issue is relevant since type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disorder and shows a bidirectional relation with many other disorders like asthma, nutrition, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, exercise, age etc. The case study helps in deeper understanding of the problem and the various symptoms that could be involved. Moreover, with prior information, one can relate the various symptoms with the onset of such type of lifestyle disorders which could be a preventive measure, if patient is found on the border line. It helps to unravel the mechanisms involved in occu
ence of such diseased state and gives information regarding the target genes which are either upregulated or deregulated in different conditions. By gathering knowledge-based information regarding disorder, one can have basic understanding of the disease, can be aware of complete know-how of the disease and can approach in right direction for the treatment. Lastly, it could be concluded that if a non-diabetic patient is prone to such inter-related factors giving rise to lifestyle disorders, then he/she must have sugar testing instrument which could be helpful in keeping a check on patient’s health status and prevent him/her if addressed on time.
Relating
Diabetes is of two types namely type 1 and type 2, but the later has affected major portion of population globally when compared to type 1 diabetes. In my observation, at least one person form each family is type 2 diabetic which could be due to multiple reasons like heredity, aging (more is the age, more chance to get prone to diabetes); patients taking lot of stress and i
egular diet (affects metabolic rates which directly impacts sugar levels of the body); patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have bidirectional relation with diabetes i.e. either unregulated sugar levels are causing CVD or vice versa; the patients who are obese (fat gets accumulated to an extent that it poses health hazard) directly contribute to type 2 diabetes. Moreover, focusing on such patients in my own family provided me the knowledge of the symptoms they undergo like time and again urination, feeling of thirst always persist, feel lethargic and tired, delay in wound healing, numbness and pain in the hands or feet in case of increased sugar levels called hyperglycaemia while blu
ed vision problem, stomach gets empty very soon and they feel hungry, sweating, dizziness etc are observed in patients with low sugar levels called hypoglycaemia. Keeping all this in mind, there must be some preventive measures or treatment to be followed to resist the diseased condition. The first and foremost treatment is the administration of either drugs or injectables (insulin injections) which are helpful in regulating the blood sugar levels to nearly normal levels and prevent further complications. Some of the drugs are metformin, biguanide antidiabetics, α-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, sulfonylurea antidiabetics etc. Reduction in the body weight proves to be a potent therapy in controlling the type 2 diabetes and the other inter related factors like CVD, obesity etc that drive such disorders. Intake of nutritive diet (diet...
