Mentoring is a form of personal development through a more personal peer relationship with
a more experienced or knowledgeable person. Mentoring facilitates learning, assists with
professional development planning and helps build self-confidence in people. Mentoring is
focused on developing individuals — that is, providing assistance in their careers and improving
their maturity in the role — thereby providing more value to them and to the employer. A typical
mentoring process involves:
ï‚· Building a relationship: Allowing the two parties to become acquainted and explore
their backgrounds and experience
ï‚· Negotiating the mentorship: Coming to a common agreement on the focus and ideal
outcomes of the mentorship period
ï‚· Learning: Working with the mentee on the defined area, reflecting on what has been
done and what could be done differently, and identifying lessons and new practices
ï‚· Closure: Bringing the mentorship to an end, and identifying key lessons and
opportunities for further development
The role of the mentor should not simply be seen as a thankless task of educating and
guiding a junior role. Research into this aspect of mentoring has identified many benefits for
oth mentor and mentee. Equally, in the mentor's role of trusted advisor to the mentee, the
