INTRODUCTION 
FABRICATION: Fabrication as an industrial term implies the construction of machines and 
structures by cutting and assembly of components produced from raw materials. Fabrication   is a 
value added process involving various raw materials and manufacturing process. Fabrication 
process involve   planning, preparation of bill of materials, process planning. Raw materials   
requirements identification, purchasing, storing and other process. Metal fabrication is the 
fabrication of cutting, bending and assembling process. Assembling is done by welding. 
The basic steps in fabrication are: 
Making fabrication sketch or drawing 
Developing a well thought out procedure 
Gathering tools and materials 
Making patterns, templates and fixtures 
Laying out and cutting material to be welded 
Cleaning the metal areas to be welded 
Making jigs or fixtures  ,if needed 
Positioning and clamping the materials prior to weld 
Tack welding assemblies and check dimensions 
Placing the final welds and assembling the final fabrications 
Painting the fabrication
WELDING: Welding is the most convenient method for joining metals. Welding is operation in 
which two or more parts are joined by means of heat or pressure or both in such a way that there 
is continuity in the nature of metal between these parts. A filler metal, whose melting 
temperature is of the same order that the parent material, may or may not be used. 
Fusion welding is class of welding in which the weld between the surfaces brought to the molten 
state, with or without the addition of filler metal. Pressure welding is a class of welding in which 
the weld is made by application of sufficient pressure to cause plastic flow of the surfaces, which 
may not be heated.
