Creating Alignment: A Pivotal Leadership Function
Effective leadership is infused with several important functions. Successful leadership is
the key to success for any organization belonging to any type of industry. In this respect the
healthcare industry is no exception. Healthcare leaders must have some specific skills and job
esponsibilities that must be properly performed for enhancing the quality of care and for
elevating the level of employee motivation, employee morale, and employee engagement. But
among the most important responsibilities of a leader is to establish alignment between employee
goals and objectives with organizational goals and objectives. Within the sphere of healthcare,
the successful completion of a project relies greatly on the leadership’s ability to establish
alignment between the project team members’ goals and objectives and the project’s goals and
objectives. Hence, it can be said that creating alignment is among the most important job
esponsibilities and leadership responsibilities of an organizational leader because; without
proper alignment, attainment of project success or organizational success becomes a difficult
task.
It is noteworthy that among the critical leadership functions is the function of creating
alignment in organizations. It is a pivotal responsibility of a leader, in the sphere of healthcare
industry (and in every other industry) to create alignment between the compelling vision of the
organization and the day-to-day work of the organization (Ransom, Joshi & Nash, 2005, p.224).
An effective leader should be capable of establishing alignment within different aspects of the
organizational developmental and operational processes. The skill of aligning is important
primarily because; alignment embodies the degree “to which the organisation’s cu
ent state
matches its desired future state” (Fuda, 2011, p.3). Hence, it can be seen that in order to
