Course Description
An introduction to management accounting concepts, principles and analysis with emphasis on
costing, planning and decision-making.

Grading Policy
Your Course grade consists of Homework (including the required Planning Assignment), Quiz and
Test Assignments. All assignments are completed at myaccountinglab.com.
Tests account for 50% of the course grade; homework (including Planning Assignment) account fo
30% of the course grade and quizzes account for the remaining 20% of the course grade.
Course grade based on following percentage guidelines:
90% to 100% A | 80% to 89% B | 70% to 79% C | 60% to 69% D | otherwise F
Important Participation Date
Students must establish attendance within nine calendar days to avoid being administratively
withdraw for non-participation (WN). Students participate and establish attendance by registering and
enrolling in the class (creating an account) at the MyAccountingLab website using the Student
Registration Handout (a PDF located in Files). No one receiving a WN will be reinstated without
documented extenuating circumstances for her or his failure to comply.

Overview
An introduction to management accounting concepts, principles and analysis with
emphasis on costing, planning and decision-making with consideration for strategy and
sustainability.
Goals
Learn about accounting as an information development and communication function that
supports economic decision-making. This should help you perform financial analysis; derive
information for personal or organizational decisions; and understand business,
governmental, and other organizational entities.
Requirements
Content—develop both an understanding of underlying concepts and principles
and ability to apply and adapt these concepts and principles in a variety of
contexts and circumstances.
Process—identify problems and opportunities, search out desired information,
analyze and interpret the information, and reach a well-reasoned conclusion.
Understand the process of inquiry in an unstructured environment.
Attitude—continual inquiry and acceptance of uncertainty and unstructured
situations.
Evaluation
Tests account for 50% of the course grade; homework (including a Comprehensive
Budgeting Project) account for 30% of the course grade and quizzes account for the
emaining 20% of the course grade.

and using the results in making management

Describe the role of managerial accounting in
usiness. Explain the role of ethics in
accounting; Identify and explain cost
concepts; Distinguish service, merchandising
and manufacturing operations; harness CVP
and capital budgeting techniques to evaluate
prospective projects; prepare budgets and
explain their use in planning; utilize standard
costing techniques to evaluate business
performance (budgetary control and cost
variance); explain continuous improvement
concepts and cost system design
techniques; compile,analyze and interpret
financial statements.

Policies
Planning Assignment | Comprehensive Budgeting Project (CBP)
A CBP is required by discipline group and/or the College’s accrediting body to measure Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
Multimedia
A student shall not, without the faculty member’s express authorization, make or receive any recording, including but not limited to audio and video
ecordings of any class, co-cu
icular meeting, organizational meeting or meeting with a faculty member. Further, the student does not have
permission to post class lectures or course lectures on the web.
Academic Dishonesty
For a description and implications of such behavior, please see HCC Administrative Procedure 3.402 and the Student Handbook – Student Code of
Conduct, page 49, paragraph “O”. Any student violating this policy will be assigned an “F” in the course.
