What survey research designs would you propose to use in each of the three situations below?
Each research design should include:
- Total population
-Confidence level
-Margin of e
o
-Final sample size
-Expected response rate (%)
-Initial (target) sample to survey, and
-Data collection method(s) to use (telephone interview, in-person interview, self-administered survey, focus groups, etc. And method of administration (mail, fax, internet, etc.)
(NOTE: your research designs may involve a combination of method)
-Estimated time and cost to complete the research.
a. A survey of 5,500 professional association members to determine annual income levels
. Describing the opinions of online education from275 MBA graduates of Georgia State Atlanta.
c. Describing the opinions of online education from 10 Georgia State Atlanta faculty members.
d. Longitudinal study (ten years) of the effectiveness of the drug on 1,450 US patients
e. Reporting the mayoral candidate preferences of Atlanta voters one month before the election.
Solutions:
a. A survey of 5,500 professional association members to determine annual income levels.
Assuming that “in this case, the size of the professional association can be determined from the association’s data itself”.
For the study we shall consider a 95% Confidence level with a margin of e
or of 5%. In order to calculate the expected response rate, we shall have to, either undertake a pilot study, and then calculate the response rate, or as in other situations, we may also assume a conservative response rate of 10-15%. Hence the initial/target sample to be surveyed comes around to approximately 37000 @ 15% response rate. As such a pilot study here would be best suited, because if the response rate is higher than the estimated one, the time, cost and effort involved in conducting the survey would go down drastically. As such, before starting with the survey one must be careful that the initial population size of the association should be in excess of 37000. Since in this case, the target sample is extremely large, the best method would be to utilize a self administered survey, which would be administered via e-mail to either all/ (randomly selected) association members. Since the data collected would already be via electronic medium and in electronic form, the time to complete the research should not exceed a fortnight and as such the costs would also be bare minimum.
. Describing the opinions of online education from 275 MBA graduates of Georgia State...
