GIBBS REFLECTIVE FRAMEWORK EXAMPLE
Introduction
Reflection is a process that occurs after an experience (Crisp & Taylor, 2017,) As part of my Master of Nursing program for my cu
iculum in professional issues in Clinical nursing unit, I had to deliver a seven-minute presentation regarding an incident/ event which impacted or influenced my nursing practice. The purpose of this reflection is to explain the experience I encountered while making the presentation for my assignment using the Gi
s’s reflective cycle. The Gi
s reflective cycle provides a framework for individuals to learn and from their experiences, either positive or negative. This model includes six stages: Description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, action plan and conclusion (The university of Edinburgh 2019).
Description
I am reflecting on my experience of delivering and developing a seven- minute oral presentation by using Panopto video recorder for my unit professional issues in clinical nursing. When I was asked to present about an event that impacted my nursing practice I immediately thought about this adverse event where a patient that was assigned to me started to have convulsive seizures during my placement. The guideline for this presentation was it needed to be maximum 10 slides, time limit of seven- minutes. I spent most of the time deciding how and what to speak for each slide and the wordings that needed to be included in the slides due to the 25 words per slide guideline.
Feelings
Initially, I was very confused about using the Panopto video recorder and maintain the time limit set. My thoughts centered on “I have never used Panopto? How am I going to manage a seven-minute presentation? I am bad with technology what am I going to do? But finally watching videos and several searches I was able to get a idea of how to use the Panopto flatform. Additionally, while making this video, I was mostly frustrated as the slides kept changing when I was recording, however after several practices I was able to successfully record the presentation and submit it. During the recording stage I was very nervous with thoughts like is my voice, ok? Am I doing the co
ect thing? But after finishing my recording I felt refreshed and confident that I had done my best in terms of the oral presentation
Evaluation
On evaluation, the experience was really challenging in initial stages of the presentation however later the situation was manageable. The positive aspect of this oral presentation was that firstly I was exposed to a new software that was not even aware of. Using Panopto was a challenge but eye-opening experience which presented me with a new software to understand, study and use for future assignments (Crisp & Taylor, 2017,). The positive aspect of using Panopto was the multiple videos that could be created and multiple saving points so if one file is deleted there was a backup copy available; additionally, the Panopto software can be used on mobile phones just an app needs to be downloaded and whatever recording is done on the phone the computer can access immediately there is no waiting period (Ziso et al., XXXXXXXXXXThe negative aspect was the time limit for the presentation and the limit of words and use of bullet points for presenting the topic. There was not sufficient time or words allocated to convey the points that needed to be addressed.
Analysis
On reflection I believe that the main contribution towards completing this assignment successfully was the multiple rehearsal and recording files saved so that I could compare and rectify on mistakes that occu
ed, additionally the multiple recordings also aided in reducing my nervousness as I got more confident in my presentation and that I the thought and guarantee that I would be able to submit a copy of the presentation that I was confident with (Swathi, XXXXXXXXXXI tried initially to record my presentation in Panopto without the practice which resulted in frames going faster and voice and video issues however through research of articles and videos I was able to grasp the presentation recording (Fauzi, 2016) Through this presentation I learnt that planning most be done and diving headfirst can create more of a problem then necessary. Additionally, I was able to improve on my presentation skills while doing this assignment (Swathi, 2015).
Action Plan
In the future if I am required to prepare a similar presentation, I will be prepared and not waste time searching and watching videos on how to work the Panopto platform. When faced with a oral presentation again I will keep in mind the time frame that I need to adhere by and furthermore but be less nervous during presentations and to not be scared. In the future I plan to not waste my time and panic if a software platform that I have not used comes across instead I will be patient and ask for help and watch some videos with practicing the software multiple times to use.
Conclusion
In conclusion if the same situation comes forth, I will act different and approach this assignment in a different method. Firstly, I would do a proper planning of the assignment and manage my time; additionally, I would not panic and start my assignment at an earlier date due to fact that I was not aware of how to use this software. The positive aspect was I was able to learn something new and this experience will aid me in future situations that might be similar. I also realized that practice was one of the key points of this assignment, the more I practiced the better I felt and more confident I got.
