Weighting: 15% Length: 750 words (one and a half pages, word count does not include references) Formatting: As a guide use Times New Roman 12-point font, 2 cm margins Scenario: Assume you are a Policy and Research Officer (Environmental Health Branch, Department of Health). A new Government Minister has been appointed and requests a Briefing Note1 to prepare for an upcoming International Environmental Health meeting. The Minister has asked you the question: “What are the key population growth challenges, environmental health issues and infectious disease risks in current or future Mega-cities?”. (Mega-cities are urban areas of more than 10 million people2 ). For this Assessment task (AT3), research and prepare the Briefing Note that considers the challenges common to most mega-cities. Do not focus on any specific Mega-city. Utilise the information and resources from HSYP8102 online resources given in weeks 8-9 as well as other relevant material (e.g. reports and journal articles, UN agency and international organisations websites). The Briefing Note should include a minimum of 10 references using Vancouver style. Notes: 1. A Briefing Note is a short paper that quickly and effectively informs a decision-maker about an issue. A useful Briefing Note distils often complex information into a short, wellstructured document. Ref: https://web.uvic.ca/~sdoyle/E302/Notes/WritingBriefingNotes.html 2. The purpose of the
iefing note is to identify the key population growth challenges, environmental health issues, and infectious disease risks in cu
ent or future megacities written by Environmental Health Branch, Department of Health.
Background
Population growth in megacities has become a key challenge. Many factors contributed towards the rise in population in the megacities which harm the lifestyle of the people. The immigration of the people in for higher education and in search of better job opportunities increased the population of the country. It had been seen that lack of employment in the rural and sub-u
an regions pushed the people to work in megacities. As a result, the pressure on the housing infrastructure developed. There is the development of the slum regions to retain these people (1).
Apart from this, people living in megacities suffered from environmental health issues. The quality of air and climate is worsening in the megacities. The high level of pollution due to human activities and the high use of cars reduced the quality of air and damaged the environment. The number of people using cars on the road is way higher in megacities compared to rural areas. All the megacities consist of the factories which contributed to worsening the environment. This increased environmental health issues (2).
People living in megacities are vulnerable to infectious diseases. It has been seen that a large number of factors contributed to the spread of infectious diseases in the megacities. People living in the megacities of the developing countries suffered from poverty. There is poor sourcing of the food and people consume the food at the places where food standards are not followed. In this situation, there is the contamination of the food which can cause infection and there is the transmission of the infectious diseases from human contacts as many people live in very small places...
