Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory, Grand Theory, In Book
Theory of Comfort by Katherine Kolcaba, Mid-Range Theory, In Book
I have chosen to compare the grand nursing theory based on human needs of Florence Nightingale with how Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort was first developed in the 1990s because in my opinion they similarly describe human needs in nursing and why it is so important to meet those needs. Nightingale’s model of nursing was developed before the general acceptance of modern disease theories (i.e., the germ theory) and other theories of medical science. Nightingale knew the germ theory, and prior to its wide publication, she had deduced that cleanliness, fresh air, sanitation, comfort, and socialization were necessary to healing. Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort is middle-range theory for health practice, education, and research. This theory has the potential to place comfort in the forefront of healthcare. According to the model, comfort is an immediate desirable outcome of nursing care. In the model, nursing is described as the process of assessing the patient’s comfort needs, developing and implementing appropriate nursing care plans, and evaluating the patient’s comfort after the care plans have been carried out. The four contexts in which patient comfort can occur are: physical, psychospiritual, environmental, and sociocultural.
Personally I selected Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort because she was focused on education specialized in Gerontology, End of Life and Long Term Care Interventions, Comfort Studies, Instrument Development, Nursing Theory, and Nursing Research. I love hospice care and provide as much comfort as possible at the end of life. Which relates to my nursing field hospice.
