Leadership Role in an Unexpected Scenario
Leadership Theory: Transactional Leadership Theory
Introduction
Leadership skills are necessarily needed in every walk of life and does not just restricts to the business organizations. I have got couple of opportunities to display my leadership skills and the most important of all was when I volunteered to help the rescue team working in the typhoon hit area. The typhoon that survived for 10 minutes shook all of us badly, since some of my friends had come to my place we all came together and stepped out of the house to involve in rescue work. It was then that I took the lead and requested everyone to follow the instructions as I had some experience in disaster management. I requested all the members to assemble at a common place and instructed them to share go out to help the needy people, I divided the responsibilities, provided them with the basic first aid and motivated them to work with dedication for the cause. I continued to encourage them and that gave them push to work in such challenging situation. The mission was a success and by the time we got the help from outside we had already started rescuing people and giving them first-aid.
How To Display Leadership
For the accomplishment of the given task I used the Transactional Leadership Theory. This theory explains leadership process on the basis of management process of organizing, controlling and doing short-term planning (McCleskey, 2014), exactly what was needed in my case. The theory clearly explains leadership that it requires continuous motivation and encouragement that is necessary for leading a team and can result in the accomplishment of the goal. It is known that leadership forms the basis of every organization as it is the art of motivating the people to achieve the desired or common goal. The Transactional leadership theory therefore works as an effective theory as it gives more promising results and better outcome and it can motivate the co-employees or the team members over the given period of time (McCleskey, 2014).
Leadership is essentially about motivating, supervising and inspiring people and transactional leadership is quite effective in this (MitraMadanchian, 2017). The implication of this theory over-emphasize on the detailed yet short term goals, the rules and the procedures. This type of leadership skill is most suitable for resolving simple yet clearly defined issues. It is highly action oriented and guarantees the quick delivery of the result. This theory well assumes that the subordinates can be motivated simply by simple transactions between the leader and the team members.
Learning from the Theory
The transactional style of leadership is not a complete leadership skill but it is not considered to be incompetent as it is effective in its own special ways (MitraMadanchian, 2017). The theory is helpful in developing maximum potential among the members. The theory also works on the basis of a simple concept of motivating the team members to their own self-interest. It thus leads to the creation of more amiable environment and gives people the push to work in coordination with each other and for a specific goal.
