Gifted Child: An Introduction
Giftedness refers to human aptitudes such as intellectual or creative abilities (CCEA,
2006). Moreover, gifted child are those who display exceptional ability in certain areas
without explicit teaching (CCEA, 2006). Further, giftedness has assigned in three different
categories, such as conservative verses liberal, single verses multi-dimensional and potential
verses performance (CCEA, 2006). The gifted child provides evidence of their high
performance potentials in areas, like certain academic field, intellectual, artistic, creativity, or
leadership quality, and the child requires extra services than what are provided by the regular
school.
Methodology
For the purpose of this study, child’s eight behaviors are observed to find out the
characteristics he possesses as a gifted child. The child is having extraordinary abilities at
very early young age of eight years. The eight observations that are recorded for the child are:
i. The child began to talk at only eight months of his age.
ii. Started reading the third grade books at the age of two-and-half years.
iii. At the age of three, he was speaking fluently with the eight years old – child’s
vocabulary.
iv. He was reported to seen intense intellectual curiosity and a passion for science
at the age of six.
v. He demonstrates the ability for organizing data into a specific pattern.
vi. He learns information quickly
vii. Possess intuitive nature for asking questions

viii. Has Ability to understand the concepts as well as processes that are very
complex in nature.
These observations will be aligned with theoretical concepts in order to develop the
program needed for meeting the special need of the gifted child as well as to outline support
service that are required by the family for up
inging of the gifted child.
Gifted child: Characteristics
There are some of common characteristics that are shared by the gifted children,
however in different combinations (NAGC, 2011). This is because of their advance thinking
ability. Some of them are having ability to learn quickly, possessing rich vocabulary,
excellent memory, good at puzzles, morally and emotionally sensitive, long attention duration
and wide range of interests, good thinkers, highly creative, compassionate, perfectionist,
strong curiosity, keen observer, and higher level of energy and concerned with fairness and
justice (NAGC, 2011). These characteristics can be grouped into following headings:
 General intellectual ability – the gifted child having exceptional intellectual
abilities if he or she has an extensive as well as detailed memory in specific area
of interest, precocious language, advanced communication skill that is more than
for his or her age, ask intelligent questions, have the ability to identify new
concepts as well as programs, ability to learn concepts quickly, curiosity to learn,
and ability to understand as well as use variety of symbol systems.

 Mathematics or Science – have interest in case of numerical analysis, good
memory power to store problems as well as solutions, intuitive sights, appreciates
simplicity, have the ability to take reverse step in mental process, ability to
organize data for discovering a pattern, and flexibility in solving the problem.
 Social Studies/Arts/Language – enjoy ve
al communication skills, engages in the
intellectual play, possess sense of humor, having competency to use these

 Creative area – the gifted child in creativity field is having in-depth foundation for

problem, ability to connect the disparate ideas, tolerates ambiguity, intellectually

criticizes constructively.
 Artistic area – the gifted child demonstrates their abilities in artistic fields like art,
music, or drama. They are having characteristics like: use to do artistic activities
during free time, studies artistic talent without being ask to study, strives hard to
improve his or her skills, concentrates on artistic projects for extended time

period, possess higher sensory sensitivity, experiments within the artistic medium,
and demonstrates high level of confidence within the artistic area.
 Arts – have the ability to provide unique as well as unusual solutions for the
artistic problems, higher sense of rhythm for drawing, possess great feel of color,
observe the minute details in the artistic fields.
 Drama – innovative as well as creative while performing, and also uses facial
expressions to communicate, adaptive to role pay, handles his or her body with
poise and ease.
 Leadership – the gifted child with strong leadership possess following
characteristics: well organized, on-task focus, problem finder, visionary, ability to
perform backward planning, adaptability to new situations, highly responsible,
