Waves
Mechanical waves - a wave that is an oscillation of matter, and therefore transfers energy through a medium
Ex: Sound! It can travel through air, water, or solids
Transverse waves- a wave vi
ating at right angles to the direction of its propagation
Ex: Ripples on water or vi
ations on a guitar string
Surface waves - A wave that has longer wavelengths than body waves
Ex: Ocean waves
A bus horn is an example of a mechanical wave.
Earthquakes
Earthquake - the shaking or trembling caused by the sudden release of energy due to plates shifting or moving
P waves - Longitudinal; Also known as a primary, comprehensional, or acoustic waves; fastest seismic wave
S waves - Transverse; Also known as a secondary, or shear waves; does not travel through fluids
Rayleigh waves - Surface; Rolls along surface like a water wave; large amplitude
Love wave - Surface; Ground moves side to side as waves move foward
