Iulian Dolan was found guilty of computer fraud and crime. Dolan was assisted by Cezar Butu to commit the fraud in a scheme that involved hacking into computers of various Subway restaurants in a bid to steal credit card payment data. Dolan remotely searched the internet with an intention to discover vulnerable Point of Sale (POS) systems in the United States. He used Remote Desktop Software Applications (RDAs) to logging into vulnerable POS systems. He cracked the passwords in a bid to gain administrative access and recorded customer’s payment data. His assistant Butu, got information on how to access the target websites with the stolen data. Using the stolen credit card, Butu tried to sell or forward the data to the other conspirators (Gross, 2012).
The scam included more than 146,000 affected payment cards which amounted to 10 million dollars in losses. Dolan took away payment cards that belonged to an estimate of 6,000 cardholders. He got more than 5,000 dollars selling this information to other hackers. Butu stole payment card information from 140 cardholders (Gross, 2012).
