NMC Code
StandardsThe (NMC) plays vital role in establishing regulatory
For the health care specialists that includes nurses and midwives. These code and standards actually enhance the knowledge and understanding of the midwives and nursing associates regarding the supervision and healthcare of their patients. The core focus of NMC codes is to ensure that nursing associates and midwives play crucial role in their profession such as providing basic and essential healthcare services to the patients and subsequently to confirm that the transparency of the NMC standard is maintained and codes are followed by the healthcare staff.
The professional standards that are set by the NMC also emphasizes on the fact that healthcare staff including nurses and nursing associates and midwives implements the basics of leadership and research work in their professional processes. It is also made compulsory that basic standards and codes set by the NMC body can be executed according to the work nature and situation but cannot be ignored or compromised at any level. It is therefore believed that such set of principles and standards are meant to enhance the quality of professional tasks and enables the health institute the properly evaluate the requirements and expectations of the patients. In this regard, the maintenance register of NMC that actually record the eligibility criteria and performances of its practicing nurses in UK, helps the council to effectively assess the reasons behind claims of impaired fitness and solutions to mitigate the probability of such charges in future The (NMC 2018).
Measured in three diverse standards of expertise, the professions are regulated with different skills, knowledge and aid. We can however work in various settings or contexts and have individual levels of responsibility and autonomy. Thus, all the regulated professions go through professional judgement and are liable for our work.
Within the required limits of their ability, midwives, nurses and nursing associates maintain the Code. For instance, while playing their designated roles in an aspect of care, a nurse and nursing associate will uphold the standards mentioned in the Code in such a way that they contribute in doing overall care. Under one’s ability, the professional assurance is a key behind principle of Code (section 13) which has a great impact on public protection and of utmost importance at all times The (NMC 2018).
Additionally, midwives, nurses and nursing associates are likely to work to their ability within the standard boundary, which might extend above the standards they prove in order to join their services.
The primary roles of NMC are:
1. Ensuringthat nurses and midwives keep their skills and professional knowledge up to date and uphold the professional standards.
2. Having clear and transparent processes to investigate the midwives and nurses who do not meet the NMC standards.
3. Ensuring that nurses and midwives deliver a high quality healthcare throughout their career (NMC Roles 2018)
Whoever cares about better nursing and midwifery, the Code is beneficial for them.
Service users and patients can offer their feedback about the care and services they received from midwives, nurses and nursing associates.
Code can be used for anyone registered to encourage safe and effective practice in their work place.
Maintenance of the standards should be supported by organizations for the staff in their professional Code as a part of the services provided for quality and safety of users and regulators.
The code set by the NMC is recognized as the true guidance by the professionals who actually strive to facilitate individuals, groups of people and community in a committed way. The NMC therefore stresses its professional to adhere to the designed structure of professionalism and have prescribed such procedures that guarantees safe and quality healthcare practice. In revalidating the process of nursing, these codes and standards set by NMC are of dominant position that actually enhances professionalism among the healthcare staff. The objectives of these standards such as ease of working process for nursing associates and comfort and satisfaction of patients has ultimately enhanced its value and trust level among the employers The ( NMC 2018).
The NMC believes that the people who visit their healthcare professional are treated equally and the treatment should not influence the dignity of the visitor. In addition, every nurse, nursing associate and midwife is liable to pay complete attention to the issues and difficulties of its patient. Hence, the response of healthcare staff in return should be in accordance of the patient’s expectation concerns. Besides, the codes and principles set by the NMC stresses the health care unit to respect the privacy and confidentiality of the people and do not leak any information that is shared during the session. It is also necessary that people who are in need of physical, social or psychological assessment are assisted and responded in positive manner. Furthermore, the communication style of the health care staff should be very clear and simple that shuns ambiguity and unprofessionalism.
Effective coordination and cooperative nature are an important aspect that includes sharing of experiences, expertise and knowledge with the co-workers with the intention to facilitate the individual who have come to receive medical treatment. The health care professional should also possess detailed and transparent record of his practices and should always be prepared to assign duties to the staff members through effective decisions. Other important sections of the code are as follows:
· In case if emergency arises, help should be offered immediately.
· No delay in providing services if there is a risk to patient’s health or public protection.
· Instantly raise the concerns if patient is vulnerable, at risk or needs extra care and support.
· The following areas should be covered within the limits of the training and capability, the law, relevant policies, regulations and guidance that include advice on, to prescribe, dispense, supply or administer any drug.

· In case of any complain made against anyone, response should be quick.

NMC Registers
Registers enables the health care bodies to have clear knowledge of those nurses, midwives and nursing associates who are enrolled on the bases of their standardized practices and professionalism codes set by NMC UK. In order to remain registered with the NMC and get revalidated in every three year, the nurses, midwives and nursing associates are required to maintain their practices according to the set standards and codes of NMC.
The register provides clear picture of enrolled and practicing nurses of UK and also entails the information of the nurses and midwives who are registered from EEA and are registered through specific route for the specific field. The entries on the register of NMC vary from month to month but the exact cumulative total of the joiners and leavers during the year is analyzed through year end data (The NMC register, 2018).
The number of nurses and midwives has surprisingly increased by 1,691 from the UK who theregister- the highest in four years. The number of 25,400 midwives and nurses left last year which is 4,034 less than that of the previous year when there has been a rise in the number of leaving i.e. 29,434.
56% of the total registers accounts for the age group between 41-50 and XXXXXXXXXXThis is perhaps a consistent data achieved during previous years but there has been a slight change in the oldest and youngest age brackets, the proportion is certainly increasing of the people under age of 30 and over 50. This shows the age profile register is diverging. Reason behind this increment i.e. 50 plus bracket could be that of the growing numbers of older workers in the UK workforce (The NMC register, 2018)
NMC Standards Set for Competence
The NMC issues its Standards that entail detailed information for the new comer nurses to understand the required standard for competence. These published standards clearly explain the pre-registered nurses and housewives to acknowledge the codes and essentials of practicing prior to registration with the NMC body. In this regard, NMC has designed the three years program that is conducted in most of the universities to facilitate the nurses with effective learning and understanding of the practice placement setting. Nurses in UK usually enhance their learning in specific field through such programs and gets registration with NMC on the bases of their nursing degree.
While above mentioned are the different fields of nursing, registered nurses are expected to fulfill the essential needs regarding physical and mental health of people with ill conditions and need end of life care. Several nurses are registered in more than one field because of their qualification in multiple fields. Nurses should sustain their ability and work standards to remain on the hospital’s register and must also practice the most recent version of The Code: Professional standards of practice and behavior for nurses and midwives (Standards for competence for registered nurses, 2018).
The nursing in divided into four main categories that includes nursing for mental health, nursing for the education of disabilities, Infants nursing, and nursing for adults. With respect to these types of nursing, NMC has also proposed four main areas that notify essential standards for competence to be applied in the professional practice of Nursing.
· Professional Values: to safeguard and provide care for the public, nurses must act instantaneously without any delay. Practice should be done autonomously on daily basis to be responsible and liable for every step taken to safeguard humanity and to provide safe, compassionate and evidence-based services.
· Communication and interpersonal skills: interpersonal skills along with good communication must be used by all nurses. It should be quite effective, shows respect towards each other, safe and compassionate. Effective use of communication technologies should be generated that includes use of wide range of interventions and strategies.
· Nursing Practice and decision making: The nurses must ensure that their practice is done under complete safety, empathy, and with great expertise where the patients feel comfortable in sharing his view and personal information during session. In addition to that, mental and physical health need of every patient should be evaluated with intense care and must ensure that dignity of the patient is upheld during the session.
· Management, Leadership and team working: It is the duty for the nurses, midwives and nursing associates to ensure professional accountability during their clinical work and take their decisions in accordance with the standards and codes of Healthcare. Also, the nurses must obtain leadership skills such as handling the uncertain situations autonomously, and motivate their co-workers to overcome any sort of challenging situation.
·
Within these four areas there are two main aspects to the standards. All nurses must demonstrate their knowledge and competence in both in order to register as a nurse. These aspects are:
· The competencies that all nurses across all fields must know and demonstrate; and
· The specific competencies of each field that an individual nurse is registered in.
6 Revalidation: Is the new process that all nurses and midwives in the UK
Will need to follow to maintain their registration with the NMC.
