Unit 6: Application Assignment Implementing a Syndromic Surveillance System
IntroductionSynopsis:This case presents a very realistic situation, in which an information system implementation has been mandated. A public health agency has been required to implement the Early Aberration Reporting System of the CDC.
In order to successfully implement the system, they must collect data from hospitals (and emergency rooms), insure patient privacy, seek funding for stability, and create the infrastructure for appropriate data analysis. (Pages 620 through 621, Wager, Lee, and Glaser text)
This case study really emphasizes the importance of information technology strategy and systems implementation.
As we saw with the rollout of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and other governmental programs, it’s not all that uncommon for regulators to mandate in acquisition and utilization of information systems, which, in turn, frequently necessitates an additional and frequently unplanned investment in additional technologies to support these systems.
This scenario will have the students evaluating decisions related to IT strategy and the governing concepts of an organization.
DirectionsThe students are expected to carefully read the assigned case study, then thoroughly and explicitly address each component of the corresponding case study questions, which are located on located on page 621 of the Wager, Lee, and Glaser text.
The responses should reflect higher level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation), which is essential for someone being prepared to serve in an operational capacity within the healthcare and related industry.
There is no minimum number of references that need to be utilized to support the completion of this assignment; however, it is generally understood that any good case analysis will incorporate the appropriate quality and quantity of outside sources to support any suppositions and recommendations.
