Task Summary
For this assessment, students prepare and present a 10-minute response to a case study. The main
goal is to share your insights and knowledge with the rest of the class, so everybody in the class
learns from your research and understanding of the case study.
A key element of this assessment is to consider appropriate communication strategies used to
engage a consumer, to build a therapeutic relationship, which fosters trust and supports recovery.
Effective communication skills are an essential skill for mental health nurses. This assessment
enhances your ve
al communication skills by requiring you to present to your peers in class. This
supportive environment will enhance your ability to feel comfortable communicating with groups of
people. These skills are relevant to clinical nursing practice on a mental health ward, including
communicating to a group of nurses in clinical handover.
In addition, as a mental health nurse you may also be required to address groups of people on the
ward, for example addressing a number of patients in the common area of the ward. Therefore,
effective ve
al communication skills are a vital asset in mental health nursing.
The assessment also facilities teamwork and collegial support, by encouraging you to support and
enhance the learning of other students in the class.

Introduction
· Schizophrenia: A hereditary neural disorder, having unfamiliar pathogenic ways, involves variation in the MHC locus. As opined by Sekar et al. (2016), patients exhibit a reduced number of synapses and it affects ~1% population globally.
· Causes of Schizophrenia: As supported by Orzeł et al. (2019), causes are genetic-dysfunction of the hormones, factors involved in neural signalling, environmental-social stress, family negligence, drug and alcohol abuse
· Symptoms of Schizophrenia: Symptoms, as informed by Lysaker, Pattison, Leonhardt, Phelps and Vohs (2018), are extreme mood swings, lack of compassion; loss of speech, hearing or mobility, development of suicidal tendencies and increased mortality rates.
· Treatment: As suggested by Stepnicki, Kondej and Kaczor (2018), treatments could be administration of antipsychotic drugs, drugs related to signalling malfunctioning such as dopamine and serotonin supported by establishment of therapeutic relationship.
1. Diagnosis, Aetiological Factors, Epidemiology & Clinical Manifestations of Jess
· Diagnosis of Jess with Schizophrenia: tendency to remain agitated, paranoid, demanding for drugs such as Valium, alcoholism, ability to hurt herself, not sharing rapport with anyone
· Aetiological Factors: a family history of Schizophrenia, drug abuse or alcoholism during adolescent or childhood, as supported by Ha
is and Panozzo (2019) also lead to schizophrenia; prevalence of depression as Jess has no family, no fixed friends
· Epidemiology of Schizophrenia: Mean prevalence of patients getting affected is 3.3 per 1000; the mortality rate is less than 15% and recovery rate- 13.5% , as supported by Charlson et al. (2018)
· Clinical Manifestations Observed in Jess: Experiencing of Tinnitus, feeling paranoid about people watching her, suicidal tendencies
2. Building Therapeutic Relationship and Rapport with Jess
· According to Pinho, Pereira and Chaves (2017), nurse should thoroughly know about schizophrenic patient’s symptomatology; need to understand the gravity potential outbursts of anything during the therapeutic session.
· I as a Therapist should introduce oneself bearing a graceful smile; look confident, not afraid while holding the session and must bear no negative or judgemental feelings towards the patient.
· Nurse must be a good listener of all the patient’s problems or sufferings even if it seems to be invalid or difficult to believe
· Sometimes therapeutic touch (or a hug) might...
