Overview
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder which develops when an individual experiences something shocking, dangerous or scary. While it is not unnatural to experience feelings of fear and insecurity subsequent to a traumatic event, some people develop an ongoing feeling of fear and anxiety that disrupts their daily life. Such individuals are said to have PTSD.  
Signs and Symptoms
It is natural for people to exhibit short term symptoms of PTSD after a shocking event, but if symptoms persist and continue for longer durations, it becomes problematic. Expereinces like accidents, sudden death of a loved one, scary or traumatic event like assault or rape can all cause PTSD (Kilpatrick et al., 2003). While symptoms usually manifest within a few months of a traumatic event in a few cases, symptoms may even appear after years. PTSD is diagnosed when symptoms are lasting and are disrupting the daily life and relationships of an individual. 
A patient diagnosed with PTSD will exhibit the following symptoms for at least 1 month:
· A re-experiencing symptom- like flashbacks, heart-racing and sweating, scary thoughts, related bad dreams
· An avoidance symptom- like avoiding places, objects and events related to or reminding of the event; even avoiding feelings in relation to the event
· A few arousal and reactivity symptoms- like being jumpy,
