Read Chapter 3 of the set text by Kroenke & Boyle
Develop answers for questions 1 – 3 and be prepared to discuss them with the tutor and other students in the class.
You will need to research some of the companies mentioned in the questions to gain an understanding of their business.
Questions/Tasks:
1. Explain in some detail the five forces that Porter identifies as determining industry structure. (4 to 5 lines on each item)
2. Analyse the situation of the company “Ai
nb” in relation to Porters Five Forces model and develop a table similar to figure 3.4 in chapter 3 of Kroenke that would document all aspects presented in that table.
3. What competitive strategy is used by Apple? Justify why you think this is the case.
4. How do businesses generate value?
5. Provide an example of a company that has used Information Systems for competitive advantage. Include a description of how they use the information system to provide advantage. You must use real company and not one of the case studies from the textbook.

1. Explanation of Porter’s Five forces for determination of industry structure.
Porter forces analyses competitive forces that effects and shape every industry, based on which firms identifies their competitive strategy. They were stated by Michael Porter in 1980.
Supplier power: Suppliers have the power to drive up the prices of goods and services. If the supplier is unique, then the firm is dependent on it and the supplier holds more power. If the cost of switching supplier is less, then suppliers do not hold much power.
Buyer power: This deals with the power with buyers or customers to drive down the prices of goods and services. If there are fewer buyers, then customers are significant, and they will be able to drive prices, otherwise they may switch to other company. 
Competitive rivalry: More the number and strength of competitors in the field, less is the power of any individual company. For the new entrant, it is advisable to begin in the territory where there are fewer competitive firms. In the competitive field with large number of firms, a firm can succeed only if offers products or services with suitable differentiating factor.
Threat of Substitution: In the industry, where close substitutes exist, the power of firm reduces as the cost of switching decreases for the customer. This reduces the power of suppliers and market attractiveness.
Threat of New entrants: The less money and time it takes for firm to enter the business and become a potential competitor, the less is the strength of any existing company. Strong barriers for entry into the business would benefit existing firms, which would like to operate in the space with fewer competitors (E. Dobbs 2014).
