Assessment criteria: Accurate presentation of the issue to be addressed; accurate presentation of other appropriate authors’ views; demonstrated depth and precision of understanding; demonstrated capacity for critical analysis; capacity to develop and defend a position of one’s own; capacity to apply perspectives and theories discussed in the course; clarity of expression, coherent structure, proper referencing. Topics for Assignment 3:
1. Demonstrating an understanding of one or more theories or authors’ views we have covered this semester, evaluate whether you support Australia’s recent adoption of Voluntary Assisted Dying. In your paper, you must also choose and critically discuss one of the arguments mentioned in Chapter 5 or 6 of the Queensland Parliamentary Committee Report into Voluntary Assisted Dying (which will be posted in the LEO Resources during the week we cover VAD).
2. Choose an area or issue in which the behaviour of humans has a significant impact on the quality of life of animals. Prominent examples include sport, agriculture, medical research and the management of conservation measures in the environment. In the context of your example, critically discuss Peter Singer’s principle of equal consideration for the interests of sentient creatures.
3. Demonstrating understanding of Peter Singer’s proposal in “One Atmosphere,” and applying one or more theories we’ve looked at this semester, do you think Australia has a moral duty to reduce its ca
on emissions to a globally sustainable per capita level? Why or why not?
4. Develop an Aristotelian style analysis of one virtue you think is important in some role either in public or private life, using examples to illustrate how the virtue is exemplified, where it is displayed in excess or deficiency, and demonstrating knowledge of some aspects of Justin Oakley’s “A Virtue Ethics Approach to Professional Roles.” Examples of roles you could focus on include the role of parenting, teaching, being a doctor, or a patient, a politician, a particular professional role, a friend.
