Topic: Port Logistics City.

Task: Students will need to: Students must first read the case study on page 249 of the textbookbefore answering the included questions.

Presentation: 2500 +/- 10% word response - word count applies to content only, not title page, table ofcontents and references list. Responses should include relevant logistics management theories –referenced and their application explained – do not just quote or paraphrase the theory. Short reportformat – title page, introduction, suitable headings and subheadings, recommendations, reference list- use Harvard (Anglia) referencing style.

Introduction
The assignment is on the topic Port Logistics city, where three different modes of logistics have been discussed namely, Land, Air and Sea. There are three case studies on each type of logistics model. All the cases were to be read carefully and questions needed to be answered at the end of the assignment.
After lot of research and data mining all the cases were studied, discussed and answered accordingly as per requirement. I have explained the answers with relevant diagrams and tables wherever needed. Below is the detailed explanation of all the case studies.
CASE STUDY ON WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
1. Alternatives for fewer bins and greater goods to be picked
Tote Bins Dividers for better Inventory Management:
Change in bin size, from present size to larger size and reducing the number of bins in total will help in better inventory management. This helps in managing tools and inventory effectively. The dividers will not only create unique spaces but also help in segregation
Advantages:
Better Organization
Maximum Storage Density
Fragile Store protection
Better spacing
Warehouse Kitting and Packaging
A common solution of Warehouse management system is Kitting. It is a process of taking multiple SKU(Stock Keeping Unit) items that a related but not identical and combining them in one package. It thus creates a new SKU. It can be build to simply complex kits that may even include up to 20 different products. This system if very effective in managing large amount of small product inventories by converting them into kits.
Advantages:
· Reduce costs
· More Store Space and Volume surges
Shrink Wrapping
Though it is not very attractive but a very useful option for additional spacing in warehouses. This technique will allow more product storage in single tote bin and reduce tote bin quantity in warehouses.
2. Dedicated area for home shopping within the SANDC, with its own inventory and OSR equipment. Implementation issues for any future operational change
Special Bar coding System:
With the use of special barcode scanner, goods for home delivery can be easily identified in AS/RS and OSR storage area. There are systems at the backend that integrates data starting from order processing, then goes to the warehouse and lastly to distribution networks. This whole process initiates shipment in a matter of minutes after receiving the order online.
Small Batch Stock Replenishment:
Also just like ZARA warehouse management system, John Lewis can adapt the same systems. Stock replenishment in small batches will help storing goods for retail store delivery and home delivery. In other words, if tote bin storage is done as per same product lines, there would be no special place requirement for home delivery section. It will save space as well simplify the process.
3. Continuous improvement in present SANDC operation in terms of efficiency, service levels, ergonomics and sustainability can be done by:
Cross Docking to improve productivity:
Cross docking means unloading the material from incoming vehicle and loading the same to outbound vehicle, without any need to store the goods in the warehouse. This reduces its warehousing time and management.
Custom kitting Strategy: Making kits of items who are frequently used together helps in organization and easy picking of products.
Use ABC analysis to organize items:
It’s called Inventory Categorization Method, to organize stores under 3 categories:
A being: Most value items
B being: Middle value items
C being Low value items
Focus should be on A category items as they are most valuable and require proper care and security and contribute most to total revenue generation.
Improve Service Levels:
By minimizing e
ors in terms of lost products, incomplete or inco
ect orders service to customers will improve and thus increasing customer satisfaction. Getting ratings and reviews from end consumer will help in understanding the performance matrix of the warehouse management efficiency.
Sustainability:
For long term sustainability, quality equipment should be used. Buying cheap equipment might seem cost-effective but it will not work for a longer period. Only adequate equipment in terms of good tote bins quality, better machines, continuous oiling, repair and maintenance of conveyor and other material handling equipment will improve productivity.
Ergonomics:
Stress level and fatigue reduces employee efficiency. Create a natural working environment. Continuous employee training and communication: using rewards and bonuses for employee motivation.
CASE STUDY ON AIR CARGO:
1. Factors helping or restricting air cargo development
Hongkong has been ranked no. 1 in World’s Leading International Airports since 1996 until recently. In a study done in 2016 Hongkong air cargo contributes to total of 1.3% of its total cargo throughput. It contributes to a total of HK$ 3.02 million. And it was estimated to surge by 2.7 % annually in coming years.
The Main factors helping in its development:
They provide port-to-port transport along with services customized to fulfill the requirements of the customers. They also provide differentiated services like: lift for courier, animal, and priority.
Cathay Pacific Airline being the flag ca
ier at Hongkong International Airport was provided with a new cargo terminal as 3rd Cargo Terminal facility in 2013 to meet increasing demands and future requirements. It has increased cargo handling capacity and increased number of cargo flights.
The government contributes substantially by providing subsidies, appropriate...
