Statement of the Problem

In the acute health care industry, it is imperative that health care organizations have educated and supportive nursing staff. Employees have to work in various kinds of environments under different management styles so that they can improve their patient care services and ensure to maintain discipline. Although the differences in management styles due to gender differences have been observed by several authors, it is still a controversial issue for the industry to understand the implication of differences in management style and gender for employee discipline.The focus of this study will be in hospitals in northern California to examine the differences of employee disciplinary practices between male and female managers within Acute Health Care industry.

Abstract
Purpose- The focus of this study was two hospitals of Bakersfield California to
examine the differences of employee disciplinary practices between male and female
managers within Acute Health Care Hospitals.
Design/methodology/approach - The researcher studied managers with more than
three years experiences and target thirty people to be a part of the study. The
esearcher used a survey research design method and a questionnaire to collect
information from the respondents. A Spearman co
elation test was used to evaluate
the responses from the health care professionals.
Research limitations -The study is limited to only two hospitals in Bakersfield,
California. Doctors and executive leadership are excluded from the study. It is
assumed that participants will give honest and adequate responses, but lack of their
interest and time to complete the survey might affect the credibility of their responses.

Practical implications- To find implications of the different management styles of
male and female managers and how it influences employees discipline among health
care employees and enhance their level of commitment and productivity.
Originality/value –This is an empirical paper exploring the issue of employee
disciplinary practices between male and female managers within Acute Health Care
Hospitals

The study aimed to add new and relevant information to the area which is less
explored. The study was successful in working out the new information by
undertaking the mix of secondary and primary research. First, relevant background
information was collected by the reviewing the past literature work done on the topic
and critically examining the same. This was done by reading and consolidating the
journal articles and the books available on the topic. The primary research is ca
ied
out by an in depth interview methodology by administration of the questionnaire
which consisted of three sections to address the role of variables like age, sex,
working experience, highest educational qualification and so on in determination of
the managerial aspects related to these variables. The other section addressed the
issue of management styles which include participatory which means good amount
of concern for self and high concern for others; autocratic which means high amount
of regard for self and low concern for others; democratic, which means low regard
for self and high concern for others; avoiding which means low regard for self and
low apprehension for others and cooperating intermediate levels of concern for both

self and others. The third section has the questions pertaining to the employee
disciplinary practices and how the management in Health Care different from other
fields. The new information which was added was in terms of the variables which
have not been studied in depth till now. It included the viewpoints of the
interviewees regarding the most suitable management style in health care industry,
whether the managerial styles impact disciplinary actions taken against the
employees, frequency of the disciplinary actions, effectiveness of the authoritarian
manager in a team, preferences for working with a participative group, frequency of
taking disciplinary actions in a group, differences which are apparent in the
managerial styles of the males and female managers. Also, information regarding the
preferences of male managers over female mangers or vice-versa in terms of
disciplinary actions was collected. It was found out whether the health care industry
