In any industry there are series of both direct and indirect impact which the industry has
in the region under which it operates. Similarly tourism industry in Australia also has series of
oth direct and indirect impacts. In this section we will explore both such impacts and see how it
shapes up tourism industry in Australia. As per the estimate of 2014-15, Tourism overall
contributes 2% to 3% to Australia’s GDP and around 4% to 5% to Australia’s employment level.
These numbers are indicative of the overall impact the tourism industry has in Australia. It has
een seen that of the 50% Australian budget which is spent on Tourism about half of that is spent
on regional areas. It means tourism industry is highly contributing to the overall development of
ural regions of Australia (Ruhanen, 2013).
The areas which are impacted by the tourism industry are mentioned below under
different heads (Dwyer, 2013).
 Employment Generation: Tourism in any region leads to huge employment generation.
As we have already assessed that tourism in Australia leads to around 5% employment.
Expenditure by both international and domestic tourists can lead to various growth in
employment in space of travels, rail roads, and hotel business.
 Development of regional communities: Australia have seen strong development of
Australian regional communities and this has been aided largely by budgetary support
from the government. This has been due to the potential generation of employment and
growth engines in different regions. There are some 84 local community cultures in
