Informative and Persuasive Speeches
Speakers should differentiate between persuasive and informative speeches. The responsibility of an informative speaker is to educate, enlighten, and enhance understanding among people using facts. On the other hand, the responsibility of a persuasive speaker is to prompt leaders to take a particular stand (Wood, 2011, p. 403). For instance, the speech by Martin Luther King, ‘I have a dream’, King fulfilled his objective by ensuring that he inform people on challenges that Negro were facing in the hands of the white people. He informed them on discrimination, trying to educate listeners on ways to walk together and attain freedom (King, n.d). On the other hand, the speech by Malcolm (n.d), “the ballot or the bullet” is persuasive as Malcolm persuaded people to act first and stop the white people from discrimination. He alleged that if people failed to act promptly, they would be forced to use the ballot or the bullet. The speaker in this case though in an informative tone, met the criteria of persuasive speakers’ responsibility.
