Ethics plays pivotal role in setting up good and positive workplace conditions for nursing professionals. However, in an every changing healthcare sector, there are multiple dimensions of patient care, which pose challenges to the implementation of ethics at workplace. For nursing professionals, there are some specific dilemmas on ethical grounds that they have to manage in their professional behavior (Barlow,Hargreaves& Gilli
and, 2018). Maintaining boundaries with patients to ensure that their privacy is respected is one of the major concerns for nursing professionals.
Given that it is not always possible to sustain professional behavior with patients especially in the long course of treatment, a very thin line of distinction is drawn between professionalism and personal involvement with patients. Ethical dilemma of this kind possesses great rationale because it should be addressed on priority with regard to maintain patient centered care (Brown, 2020).
Patient Nursing Boundaries versus Patient Centered Care Model
At first, it is significant to overview the key sources, from which the patient-nursing boundary based ethical dilemma emerges in workplace conditions. For nursing professionals, it is likely possible that they get fully involved in the process of care, following the ideal concept of patient centered care approach (Rainer, Schneider& Lorenz, 2018). They maintain the professional behavioral approach while treating and monitoring the patients as well as they do take care—and at times, they address with sufficient knowledge—of the concerns of the family members of the patient as well.
Their ultimate objective in this context remains over satisfying the needs and expectations of the patients and their families from the healthcare system. However, ethical dilemma emerges when patients or their families initiate requests, which cannot be categorized as ‘professional’. This is due to the confidence and effective communication of the nursing professionals.For example, at times, nursing professionals receive requests of extending their shifts, persuading authorities to provide early discharge or even advocating on behalf of the patients for applying some treatment procedure over the patient.
The situation becomes critical when patients become personally involved in the process of building relationships with nursing professionals and they feel like they have some kind of connection with nurses assigned to their care(Barlow et al., 2018).
