Assessment Task 2- Poverty and Homelessness

Regardless of the pace of development of any nation, the fact that there are hundreds of people going to bed without food can’t be ignored. Homelessness Australia XXXXXXXXXXstatethat homelessness and poverty are interrelated and about 12% of all people and 17% of children in Australia live in poverty. Poverty and homelessnessareleading to poor development of growing countries at a global level, for example, approximately 78 million people are homeless including 11 million street children in India (Homeless World Cup Foundation, 2018), which is significant enough to impact the development of the country.

Given thepresentrate of poverty and homelessness around the world it is evident that the idea of common good and its other dimensionsare not being fulfilled. It is not an individual’s play to fight poverty, it should be covered by the whole community to meet the common good of one and all. Isn’t the dignity of these homeless people at question? Do you think that the people living in poverty would be living with dignity? Participation, as described in the Catholic Social Teachingmeans that every human on the Earth has equal rights and responsibilities towards all financial, political, social and religious affairs be it directly or indirectly, so everyone plays an equal role in helping the needy (Caritas Australia, 2016).

Homeless and poverty-stricken people are not only susceptible to war of drugbut also to poor hygiene and lack of medical attention resulting in poor health whichimpactsthe country’s overall development rate (Turnbull, Muckle & Masters, XXXXXXXXXXPoverty and homelessness lead to many challenges but there is also a hope to solve these. The root causes of homelessnessneedto be identified. Government’s initiative to provide affordable and cost-effective housing is one of the solutions to this catastrophic problem and would help in resolving the issue of common good.The government can also take several steps to reduce poverty like, providing free education to the poor, utilizing some amount of the government’s foreign aid in improving the healthcare provided to the homeless people (Economics Help, XXXXXXXXXXThe government can also reduce poverty by working along with some of the non-profit organisations which are directly in touch with the people in need of help (Economics Help, XXXXXXXXXXThere are several acts passed by the government at various levels that influence the homeless and poorpeople (Caritas Australia, XXXXXXXXXXThe principle of subsidiarity necessitates the participation of the people who will be affected by the decision, hence the government should include these people or their representatives in such discussions (Caritas Australia, 2018).

The community along with the government alsoplays a central role in helping the homeless and the poor people. An individual and their community need to coordinate and organise some anti-poverty programmes that wouldaidin finding some employment, housing, transportation, access to basic education, social services are a few examples that might aid the struggling population.Avoiding giving money to beggars and instead taking initiative to find a simple or even small employment for them is one but a huge step towards eradicating poverty in any nation. However, in doing so any individual would need assistance from thecommunity or the government.Mackay, XXXXXXXXXXstates that “good life is not all about one individual’s life, it is about whole global community”.Small contributions also make a huge difference. So how as an individual can we contribute towards a better world for the poor people? Some ideas include donation of clothes and household items that are no more needed, holding small educational sessions for poor children. Local health care team caneducate them about how they can maintain their health and hygiene, basic first aid techniques and about healthy eating options they have.

To accomplish the common good forthe people that are living in poverty and are homelessthe and individual’s role is not sufficient, the whole community needs to come together and fight for the common good of one and all.

THE PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
The international and national security is the cornerstone of common good globally and locally (Hehir, 2007). However, the nuclear era started in 1945 with the bombing of the Japan cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki have left shockwaves across the globe questioning the security of mankind. Since then, various countries have got armed with  nuclear power. The US and Russia only had access to nuclear weapons till 1952, however, France, UK, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea are also in the game today (ICAN, n. d.). Even though, Manhattan project was the only time where a nuclear weapon was used in a warfront, today 14, 900 warheads are possessed by these 9 countries including 2000 nuclear tests performed globally (UNODA, n. d.). In its explosive form, the entire planet could be turned into ashes in no time (Smith, 2016).
As a principal cause, favouring nuclear weapons by countries is a method of national defence as explained by the State survival theory (Smith, 2016). However, this, in effect, make other countries feel insecure promoting them to equip with the same as seen in the case of Iran (Sidel and Levy, 2007). Today, when countries sought  survival formulas, national prestige and 'great power’ status (Smith, 2016), the threat of nuclear weapons is considered to be higher than that experienced post the Cold war period with increased count of nuclear-armed nations, terrorists and cyber attacks putting our safety at stake (Orphanides, 2017). The innumerable health and environmental hazards of nuclear weapons is also a topic of major debate.
