THE EFFECTS OF USING SECLUSION ON THE RECOVERY OF ADULT INPATIENT
INTRODUCTION AND STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES :
Seclusion as well as restraint were the interventions that are cu
ently permitted to manage the behavior of a person in the field of mental health services. This has been an issue of serious concern in Australia since 1993 (Brophy L.M., 2016). Though many nurses support seclusion as a necessary behavioral management strategy, its negative impact on the patients as well as on the nurses are also being acknowledged increasingly (Happell, 2011). The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) is an organization that focuses on providing better and quality mental health services. This organization has identified seclusion to have many negative impacts on the patients and has come up to reduce (or) even eliminate its use wherever possible which supports to maintain a good clinical practice and provides improved and safe care for the patients (or) the consumers (The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, 2016).
This assignment aims on exploring the effects of using seclusion on the recovery of adult inpatients. The main objectives included are :
1) To understand the various effects that are caused among the adult inpatients by the use of seclusion during their recovery process.
2) To explore the articles that have already reported their observations on seclusion and critique them by considering the cu
ent available evidence for practice.
SIGNIFICANCE OF TOPIC :
Though the practice of seclusion and restraint are found to be beneficial sometimes, they can also lead to some serious harm in psychological and physical level of the individual. Hence, it is very essential to reconcile any kind of use of these practices with the risks associated with them (Kumble. S, 2010).
After detecting the various negative impacts of seclusion, all of the Australian jurisdictions have also introduced the laws, policies (or) guidelines that focus on reducing the events of seclusion and restraints, the time spent for it and the trauma associated with these practices (The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, 2016).
Hence, this topic helps in analyzing the various impacts (or) effects of seclusion on the adult patients who are recovering, including the ones with the intellectual disability and aged care settings.
DEFINITIONS :
For a long time, seclusion and restraint have been used in the management of violent behavior (or) agitation in the mental health settings as an emergency measure. This was considered for reducing the risk of any injury (or) traumatic experience that may be faced by either the staff involved (or) the consumers (The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, 2016).
Seclusion refers to the isolated confinement of a person in an area (or) room, which is done deliberately so as to prevent his (or) her free exit (Kumble. S, 2010).
Restraint refers to the use of a bodily force (physical restraint) (or) use of a device (mechanical restraint) (or) also the use of medication (chemical restraint) to control an individual’s freedom of movement. The chemical means will first restrict a person’s movement and then helps in treatment of a mental illness (or) a physical condition (McShe
y. B, 2013).
SEARCH STRATEGY AND JUSTIFICATION OF USE OF LITERATURE :
Since the late 1990s many studies were done in the hospital inpatient settings for knowing and studying the seclusion and mechanical restraint effects on the patient. These studies were done for a period ranging from 3 days to many years. I
espective of their diversities, these studies commonly share many concerns among them (Brophy L.M., 2016).
Hence, this study involves all such major studies performed. The articles for analyzing this topic were to be selected with utmost consideration of the parameters involved in it. The scholarly articles were only considered for this analysis. The latest nine articles which showcased the major concerns and issues were taken for the analysis of this topic.
The steps that were followed in the search strategy included :
1) the qualitative comments given the articles were read and understood ;
2) data codes were generated mainly assessing the positive, negative as well as the neutral comments provided ;
3) reviewing the data, a
anging and identifying them according to the themes ;
4) the analysis performed was written up and then examined to ensure the accuracy in representation of these analyzed data in accordance with the themes (Justine Fletcher,...
