Introduction
In this era of globalization, when people from different social and cultural backgrounds are often seen coming in contact with each other, understanding social norms becomes quite important. Norms, in general can be described as the ways of behaving in accordance with what the society has decided to be good or bad and right or wrong. Most of the members of the society are expected to adhere to these norms. To put in simple words, social norms can be described as the accepted standards of behaviour of social groups. In this essay, an effort has been made to describe social norms and their impact on the shaping of behaviour. The essay will also discuss about the every day examples in close association with social norms. The essay will also cover the concepts of culture and will discuss about the different type of norms. According to Nyborg (2018), social norms can be defined as the implicit or explicit rules a social group follows for defining acceptable values, beliefs and behaviour of its members.
Culture and Social Norms
Different cultures have a huge impact on the social norms, and the influence of culture on the norms of the society cannot be ignored. Individuals belonging to different cultures have different characteristics, speak different languages and have their own set of ideologies, values and beliefs. Different cultures have their own social habits and therefore, the social norms for people from one culture may be quite different from the social norms for people from another culture. Though people tend to agree with some common social norms, which have been accepted by people from different cultures living within the same society, each culture also have their own cultural norms. These cultural norms can be considered as the shared set of standards, rules and behaviour, which people from a particular culture follow while living in a society. This has an impact on the behaviour of the people and highlights the behaviour of the people from different cultural backgrounds with the people from their own culture as well...
