Introduction
EHR or Electronic Health Record system saves both time and effort when it comes to handling data and significantly reduces the time spent by clerical employees on these tasks, as discussed by Carayon, Smith, Hundt, Kuruchittham & Li (2009). As such the EHR system requires the implementation of a proper strategy in order to make the EHR endeavours a success. In the implementation of this strategy it is important to create an EHR Committee that oversees the smooth transition to EHR systems and ensures all related tasks are accomplished successfully.
At the same time, it is also important to have the necessary equipment, both hardware and software that can handle the necessary EHR implementation. Another reason for ensuring proper equipment is that all EHR works are to take place through electronic media and thus having the right equipment is vital to the success of EHR.
The EHR Steering Committee
The EHR Steering Committee is a diverse body that is set to have a relatively long-term nature. This committee is vital since it is responsible for seeing through the implementation of EHR to the end. Since EHR is in itself a long-term case, the steering committee is poised to have a long life. The EHR team will initiate its existence with a clearly defined goal and timeline. The team will involve the organizations senior governing body since it will be in need of decisions regarding budget, resource allocation, and strategic planning (Nguyen, Saranto, Tapanainen & Ishmatova, 2014).
An ideal EHR Steering Committee's membership will need to look at the size and duration of the project. Typically, the ideal size of a Steering Committee is less than 12 individuals. The committee members must include executives from areas that are to experience largest impact through the implementation of the project. The committee will be required to meet at least once a month with more frequent meets at the early stages of implementing EHR.
An EHR Steering Committee usually identifies four individuals as key participants for EHR. These are typically called Project Champions.  These four individuals must be representative of physician, nursing, administration, and IT.  This sub-committee of the EHR Steering Committee must be both active and reliable and as a necessity meet at least once a week to avoid delay in decision making. This group also needs to be favoured enough by the seniors to grant them decision making power.
This subcommittee needs to be closely knit since it requires critical decision making that can be vital to the success of EHR.
