Case Study
Kim, a Registered Nurse, graduated from the University of Technology Sydney in 2018. She
is now undertaking a Transition to Practice (TTP) program at a tertiary hospital in western
Sydney. Halfway through her program, she was involved in a cardiac a
est on the ward.
Fortunately, the patient was successfully resuscitated and transfe
ed to the Intensive Care
Unit. The resuscitation went smoothly apart from an incident where the attending Registrar
shouted at Kim, admonishing her for not knowing which equipment to provide for the
intubation. Up until that point, Kim had felt that she was “getting on top of things” and coping
quite well with the demands of ward work. Kim left the a
est feeling “hopeless” and “useless”
and incompetent as a nurse. These thoughts and feelings are causing her ongoing distress
and emba
assment, damaging her confidence and affecting her ability to conduct everyday
nursing tasks. For the first time in her career, she is considering leaving.
The following day, Kim’s Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) approaches her on the floor during the
usy morning shift (su
ounded by colleagues and patients). She says “I hear you were really
upset and might need some counselling after what happened during the a
est the other day.
I am free now, come into my office”. Kim follows the NUM into her office, feeling emba
assed
that the issue was raised in front of her colleagues and other patients. Kim also feels uneasy
about burdening her colleagues with her workload while she is in the office. Kim sits down
and begins to listen to the NUM….

Introduction
Leadership regards as an essential and complex matter that required in every sector of the industry. Leaders are required to manage their team members to secure the success of teamwork. This assignment enclosed with a
ief discussion of nursing associated issues that often recognized as an effective factor for nursing leaders to do their job. As a leader of healthcare management, he or she should focus on their team members that the objective of the healthcare system could be obtained. The safety associated issues and quality service is the prior factor that has considered by leaders NUM to provide the best practice. To accomplish this prior objective of healthcare leaders of NUM focus on the skill development of nursing staff that are newly registered and graduated. Regarding the case study, the entire issues associated with the practice of nursing also considered in this assignment for the better assessment. Similarly, the entire expectations of clinical leadership that required for a new graduate nurse considered in this assignment for the better assessment of this study paper. However, the Gi
s model of reflection has been considered here for the development of personal and professional strategies by which nurses can develop their personality. The paper ends with the discussion of supportive elements such as knowledge, communication that affect the leadership of nursing.
Issues and factors that impact on nursing leaders and professional practice
The members of Nursing Unit Management regarded as registered nurses who are underlying the duty of healthcare professionals. They were experienced and skilled in their profession. Minimum 3-5 years experienced nurses can be a member of NUM. They are responsible for the operation of nursing units in hospitals or any other healthcare organisations. It has become very necessary for the NUM that it should consist of skilled and efficient staff that they can operate the entire operational activities of the nursing unit and can preserve the safety of their patient. However, they also operate clinical duties that the smoothness of the healthcare system can maintained and sustained.
Similarly, the members of NUM should focus on the leadership responsibility that required managing the staff of the nursing team that they can provide excellent services for the organisation. According to Fallatah & Laschinger (2016), the prior responsibility of the members of NUM to engage their nursing staff that they can provide a better care system for the organisation. However, the members of NUM should focus on the nursing staff that is newly joined and not much able to manage critical medical cases.regarding the case study, Kim is newly graduate nursing staff and not has enough experience to manage a critical case of cardiac a
est. As suggested by Keyko et al. (2016), this is the reason she could not properly manage that case and face trouble. Her superior was shouting her and that emerged negativity into her and she becomes very disappointed after this incident.
According to my point of view, the response of the registered member of NUM is very disappointing and inappropriate in that situation where Kim felt insulted as the registered nurse scold her in front of other staff and other members of the hospital. As suggested by Rosen, Ashwood & Richardson (2016), RN policy no 5 and 5.1 the registered member of NUM should enhance collaborative approach and positive attitude towards the strategy of nursing until the objectives and goals of the medical health care can be obtained. Therefore, it can suggest that the members of NUM should follow this standard of RN and should maintain it thoroughly. According to my suggestion, Kim should call by personally where no other staff are allowed to come and should consult with her. However, she needs to be proper guidance as she was new and inexperienced. According to Laschinger & Fida (2015), the cu
ently registered member of nursing should properly explain the issue of nursing practise that has been faced by Kim and that would be a better strategy that can properly...
