802.11 standards are established by IEEE that has enabled mass market and possess great influence in various areas like homes, public areas as well as offices. Now a days, wireless LAN technology is incorporated among almost everything, be it laptop, Cellular phones, PCS, MP3 players, Printers, VoIP phones or any other such device. With ever increasing application space, 802.11 has thus become a universal solution that supports high data rates with that of low cost chipsets. Due to high market penetration of these standards, there was need of several up gradations and amendments in the basic standards of 802.11. This tends to add functional value as well as fixing of technological issues that may be associated with the future applications of these standards. This article outlines the overview of 802.11 standards, its explanation and reference guide along with specifications. Advantages and disadvantages of these standards are also clearly described herein. The article highlights practical application of 802.11X along with its limitations and critique followed by future recommendations to enhance its improvement.

The family of 802.11 standards consists of over the air modulation techniques for a series of half duplex using the same protocol employing carrier sense multiple access along with avoiding collision. Here in the equipment tends to listen channel before the packet transmission. The first warless networking standard of the family was 802.11.1991 but the widely accepted one was 802.11b followed by acceptance of 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11ac and 802.11n.
