The spread of the Islamic Caliphates created another empire extending from Spain to India in a rapid span of time. Yet, there were significant differences and conflicts between the Abbasid and Umayyad Caliphates. What is the origin of these, and what influences are found in these respective areas?  Do you think this region can correctly be called an empire, if it is based on religion instead of politics? How would this compare with the argument that Charlemagne created a Christian Empire?
