The Session Long Project entails going through the process of influencing policymakers. In prior SLP assignments you wrote a letter to “raise a concern” and “oppose a position” or “support a position.” While these are direct ways of influencing policymakers by letter writing, there are additional indirect ways that can also achieve your objectives. Some ways are writing a letter to the editor or “Op-Eds.”

Advocacy Toolbox | Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council Page 1 of 3 (http://go.okstate.edu) OKLAHOMA REHABILITATION COUNCIL (/) ORC - Serving All Oklahomans with Disabilities Advocacy Toolbox Who We Are and Why We Did This The Advocacy Toolbox is a project of the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council. It is modeled after the Health Advocacy Toolbox (http://www.cthealthpolicy.org/toolbox/default.htm) by the Connecticut Health Policy Project. The mission of the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council (ORC) is to facilitate consumer education and empowerment, to assure services are of high quality, and lead to employment of individuals with disabilities in the State of Oklahoma. This Toolbox addresses the consumer education and empowerment aspect of our mission. Many of us feel disaffected and helpless to change policies that aren't really working or that it takes a lot of money and/or time to be effective. Often it seems like the systems are extremely complex and only professionals can have an impact. The truth is that average citizens, with minimal time commitments, can be very effective and it doesn't have to cost anything. Policymakers are invariably moved by real stories from real people. All that is needed are the right tools. The tips and procedures provided in the Toolbox are built to give people the skills they need to address the problems they face. The goal of the Toolbox is skill development that consumers will use to benefit their own issues. It is our hope that the Toolbox provides a realistic framework of information and resources for interested consumers to make your voices heard with the strength that comes from knowledge - drawing back the curtain on what too often appears to be a closed process. Note: the FULL outline of resources in this section is shown below. You will see the major sections (Legislative Updates, Important Links, Advocacy Tips, and Effective Communication) in the main menu above and in the left sidebar. Each of those links will have...

To Whom It May Concern:
There is a proposal for providing insurance for pregnant women for a year by the General
Assembly. Your previous editorial has not recommended to pass this bill due to the
inexpensive nature of dental care treatment which can be afforded by the families. I want to
express my disagreement with the views expressed by your editorial and I am in total support
for the proposal passed by the General Assembly in this regard. The average cost of teeth
examination and cleaning in the state of California is $299. Dentists generally recommend a
cleaning at a periodicity of 6 months to prevent the higher risk of contracting periodontal
disease which transforms to 2 cleanings during the entire period of pregnancy. The said
proposal would definitely help and assist the families to fulfil this basic requirement and at
the same time preventing dental emergencies. It is pertinent to mention here that many
families may not give top priority to dental care due to their poor economic status but all the
same, it is essential for their overall health. If the bill passed by the General assembly is
passed by the policymakers, then the pregnant women would get the benefit of insurance for
dental examination and dental cleaning till the child birth. This will help in improving the
statistics with lesser women undergoing dental emergencies which otherwise if left untreated
could seriously...
