Introduction
The study explores the adverse effects of stress and burnout in nurses. In this regard, I have selected the profile of Ginnie who is young and is a nurse graduate, cu
ently employed in the operational department of a public healthcare organisation. She lives with other women who have come to Australia for job purposeless. She is hard-working and often works overtime if needed. Ginnie sends a part of her income to her family and in her leisure time, she enjoys reading, cooking and spending time with her housemates.
Stress and burnout experienced by nurses concerning physiological, emotional and behavioural stressor responses
Healthcare workplace stress is increasing at an alarming rate in recent years and nurses are significantly affected by this change (Khamisa, Peltzer, Ilic & Oldenburg, 2016). The stressors include management issues, physical demand, difficulty in maintaining work-life balance and lack of resources. Additionally, Horn, Lindström & Rosengren (2018) stated that nurse burnout is a mental, physical and emotional state developed by chronic work pressure along with a sustained limitation of workplace support and job satisfaction. The usual burnout symptoms include emotional or physical exhaustion, lower sense of personal fulfilment and job-based cynicism. In this regard, Lim & Lee (2017) revealed that if this burnout state does not improve on its own, it may lead to persistent clinical depression highlighting it to be unattended symptoms aggregate over time.
Negative attitudes and behaviours of surgeons and ineffective communication are risk factors of stress in nurses involved in the operational department (Yao et al., 2018). From Ginnie’s profile, I can witness the workload imposed on her every week. As she is engaged with the operating department, patient safety acts as the crucial stressor for her. Ginnie is exposed to extensive work pressure as she ca
ies out overtime duty or in emergency cases. As she is assigned mainly with the instrument or circulating nurse’s job, I believe she has to take care of the associated nursing responsibilities in the operating department besides handling patients. Thus, if the team communication is not efficient, it can act a potential stress factor for Ginnie who is just a nurse graduate without any experience to cope with such stressors. As...
