Abstract: 
Separation of chemicals is one of the crucial processes in any chemical company. Any sort of failure in 
the handling the chemicals may cause fatal health hazards or economic and environmental loss. Hence, 
proper design consideration of the chemical handling equipments and machines is necessary as the 
chemicals have corrosive action to certain materials. The following report deals with one such situation 
of failure in the distillation column used to separate Dimethyl Formamide (DMF) and Triethylamine 
(TEA). Probable causes of failure have been identified by performing various experiments and suitable 
recommendations have been suggested in the revised designs. 
Introduction: 
A distillation column in operation for seven years 
to separate acetone is modified to separate 
Dimethyl Formamide (DMF) and Triethylamine 
(TEA) by the addition of 3.5m of bottom section 
to the column increasing its overall height up to 
12m. It is operated for 6 days a week and steam 
cleaned on the 7th day to remove the deposits 
and residues appearing on the reboiler tube 
surfaces and common trays. After 3 months of 
operation, a weld failure occurred in the 
reboiler/column pipe-work which was then 
replaced. It was welded again when small leaks 
started appearing.
