The purpose of this assignment is to apply your knowledge and understanding of physics concepts that you studied this year through the analysis of a Rube Goldberg machine, such as the Honda “Cog” commercial. You will select at least two (2) stages of the commercial to analyze. (A stage is one distinct section or action performed by the Rube Goldberg machine, such as a tire rolling up a ramp and setting another tire into motion.) For each stage, you will then apply relevant concepts and equations to explain what is happening in the stage. Requirements: You will submit a report consisting of a brief description, mathematical and qualitative analysis of at least 2 stages of the Honda Cog commercial, using concepts from the 4 units studied this past year up to this point. You must use equations from at least 2 of the units. Your report should be a maximum of 2 pages, double-sided (or 4 pages, singlesided). Honda “Cog” Commercial: You are to use the Honda “Cog” commercial (“The Making of Honda Cog”, YouTube video found at the URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4zWeUDW-E&feature=related, accessed May XXXXXXXXXXAnother video which may be useful to you, particularly for the automobile car parts used in the commercial is the “Honda Cog Illustrated Guide”, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a794KFW3Wc4) Stage Analysis:  For the analysis of each stage, the attached template (“Stage Analysis Template”) may be useful.  What happens in each stage should be briefly described with estimated measurements or figures if possible (e.g. “the tire rises 0.50 m over 4 m”, and then a relevant physics principle (e.g. Newton’s 1st Law), force diagram or equation should be applied. If you use an equation, a complete calculation (including units) should be presented. State whether the result of your calculation is reasonable, and suggest a reason if it does not.  Diagrams or screen captures (e.g. using the print screen function or scanned) of the stage may be included (helpful instructions below). Each stage (including diagram and analysis) can be from a half page to a maximum of 1 page in length.  You must use 1 physics concept or equation from each of the five (5) units we studied up to this point: Waves and Sound, Kinematics (Motion), Forces, Energy, Electricity and Magnetism. It is recommended that you type your report (lines single-spaced, font size no larger than 12 point). Diagrams may be either hand-drawn or screen captures. Equations and sample calculations may be written using the Microsoft Equation editor in Microsoft Word (from the top menu, Insert → Object →Microsoft Equation) or neatly handwritten. Screen Capture Procedure: 1. Play the commercial in Youtube. 2. Stop the video at the point of interest. Make it fullscreen. 3. Press the following keys at the same time: Fn (function), Alt, and Prt Sc (Print Screen). 4. Open up a Microsoft Word document, and paste (Ctrl + v). Adjust the size according to what you want.
