1. Introduction
a. Importance of Public Health Issue
The public health issue selected for the study is high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Every day, large numbers of sugar-sweetened beverages are sold worldwide, which is consumed by a variety of people. Beverage industries are successful in launching a wide range of sugar-sweetened beverages. With the help of good marketing and affordable pricing, they are able to attract a wide range of people. Over the past few years, consumption of SSBs has been increased vigorously. People have switched from consuming freshly produced juice in the kitchen to packaged juices available in the market. The wide range of sugar beverages available in the market includes soda, soft drink, juices, flavoured water and many others. In year 2011-2014, the rate of consumption of this drink reached up to 63% among youth and 49% among adults (1).
It must be noted that sugar sweetened beverages can have negative effects on the health of the person consuming it at high rates. This is a poor health behaviour among people mainly youth belonging to the lower income group. The consumption of SSBs results into obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, tooth cavity, coronary heart disorder, kidney issue and liver issues. Sugar-sweetened beverages result in lowering the quality of life as it lowers the health quality (2). It has been seen that sweetened beverages have resulted in increasing obesity globally. Today, most of the people are either overweight or obese. The obesity has become the global health burden. According to World Health Organisation, the rate of obesity among Australian is very high. Apart from adults, rate of obesity among children and youth is also too high (3).
. Chosen Target Audience
The target population selected for the study is children going to the school, belonging to lower income group. It has been seen that younger population of Australia, especially, children are highly affected by the issue of high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. The childhood obesity is high mainly due to food eating behaviour of the children. Earlier, children visit fast food outlets once in a month. Nowadays, every other day, children are consuming fat and ca
ohydrate rich food as well as high sugar-sweetened beverages. As an outcome, children are mostly either overweight or obese (4).
The Australian Beverage Council has taken a decision to control the childhood obesity and overweight among school going children. Students, mainly teenagers, have reported very high rates of consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. This can be done by changing the behaviour of students towards their food consumption (5). Although, most of the school canteens prefer to serve healthy food and ban the selling of soft drinks to improve the food eating habit of students, yet serving of the packaged fruit juices failed to meet the objective of banning of the food. It has been seen that fruit juices, which are packaged, have dangerous level of sugar content in it, which fail to meet the purpose and contributed to the obesity and overweight of the children. Thus, focus is made on school going students belonging to lower income group (6).
2. Health Promotion Program
a. Health Promotion Program in Changing Behaviou
Since this health promotion program includes children between the age of 7 and 16 years, therefore, for dealing with them, it is necessary to include parents, teachers and people from the local community to participate in the health promotion program. Since schools selected consist of students belonging to the lower economic group, therefore, both parents belonging to this group are working and they cannot give proper time to their children. Thus, being guilty of it, they allow their kids to live their lives in their way, eating junk food and drinking sugary food, thinking that these might give happiness to the children for the time being. However, with prolonged implementation, it causes health hazard.
Thus, first step of change is conduction of the seminar on sugar-sweetened beverages and its harmful impact on the health (7). It has been seen that most of the parents are unaware that the beverage they are allowing their children to consume can be harmful for their health. Obese child might be a cute child but it cannot be healthy child. After conduction of the seminar, each parent would be given a leaflet, which contains instruction about the harmful effects of the sugar-sweetened beverages. It also contains information about the alternatives, which can be given to the children, so they can enjoy as well as get nourished (8).
After the seminar, question and answer round would be conducted where parents can ask questions related to the health issue and clear their myths related to the health outcome and food behaviour of children. It has been seen that parents find it difficult to establish link between disease and sugary drinks. This seminar would...
