Charity care has always been associated with hospitals. Thus this paper focuses on charity care policy in Emory University Hospital. There is a close examination of the impacts of uncompensated care to organizational structure, management policies and financial status of both hospitals. The charity care policies of Emory University Hospital have been examined with those of  St Joesph /Candler Hospital.

Introduction 
According to Desai & Deusen (2000), compensated care is a form of free or discounted health care services offered to persons who cannot afford to pay, the uninsured and low income patients who have bills that have not been or cannot be paid. Uncompensated medical care can also be referred to as charity care or free care. These names have been used interchangeably in this paper.
A hospital charity care policy regulates the number of patients that are treated without paying their hospital bill. This policy aims at giving medical care to those who cannot afford and are in critical conditions (Bovbjerg, 1998). Emory University Hospital has a charity care policy that supports both the patient and the hospital. Donations that are made in this hospital touch many lives of patients in the Emory University Hospital community since many people have access to world class medicine. The donations come in inform of gifts from individuals, foundations or corporate firms.
Emory Healthcare is the clinical branch of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University. The hospital concentrates in general patient care, educating health professionals, research and health policies. Emory University Hospital has a policy that allows uncompensated care to be translated into free medical care for the unfortunate in the society.
