The IRB Process

An HIM researcher is interested in studying the roles and functions of individuals who are engaged in health informatics positions. The researcher would like to have three focus groups of HIM/ HI professionals who are working in this capacity. They will formulate questions that they will ask them and analyze the interviews using qualitative research methods and analysis. Also, a survey will be sent out to a representative sample of HIM/HI professionals to determine their roles and functions in their respective positions.

What type of study design is this?

Will this type of study need to go through the IRB process? Why or why not?

What types of information will the HIM researcher need to submit to the IRB? (b) Under what level will it be reviewed (not research, no human subject involvement, exempt, expedited, full board review)?

Deliverable: Address the questions above in a 3-5 page paper using APA format.

Introduction
Following is a case study of the HIM researcher who wanted to know the roles and functions of the individuals engaged in health informatics positions. The researcher wanted to have three focus groups for the conduction of the interview and conducted the survey among the HIM professionals to understand their roles as well as their functions.
Type of Study Design Suggested in the Case Study
The study design suggested in the case study is a primary research method. As mentioned by Sluka (2018), primary research method can be defined as the research method, in which data is collected directly from the field instead of acquiring data from the previously available research. In the case study, mixed methodology will be proposed to use. In mixed methodology, both qualitative and quantitative method is used. Under quantitative study, focus group method is used. As stated by Peterson, Zhao, Cai and Oh (2018), focus group method can be defined as the qualitative method, in which group of samples selected for the study are interviewed in a group and participants are freed to conduct discussion on the topic.
As per the case study, group of HIM professional working in the healthcare. On the contrary, for the quantitative method, survey-based method would be used. As mentioned by Ellingson, Bonk and Chamberlain (2017), survey-based method can be defined as the method, in which survey is conducted using the questionnaire consisting pre-defined questions. As per the case study, survey questions will be sent to the representative sample of HIM professionals to identify their roles and functions in their respective positions. The answers given by focus group in study and the answers given by sample in survey will be used to develop the result.
If this Type of Study would Go through IRB Process
This type of study will need to go through the IRB process. This is because this research study consists of the human research. The IRB reviewed all the research studies, which includes human as subject matter. As mentioned by Osborne and Luoma (2018), the main role pursued by the Institutional review board is protecting the rights of the people participated in the study and ensuring their welfare under the authority of this board. There are specific criteria followed by IRB to provide approval as listed in...
