‘We were Children’ is a clear testimony of two survivors namely Lyna Hart and Glen Anaquod. Lyna was removed from the family to a school located in central Manitoba (Reddington & Price, 2018). Glen was orphaned and entered school in Saskatchewan. This was a part of children from seven generations of
oken and completely abandonment. For several survivors, the pain is too much to tolerate and there is less opportunity to bury the disastrous memories deeply in the heart. Times were changing so those who are entrusted with duties in the residential system of schools were providing an apology to the people of First Nations for their immeasurable sufferings. It was becoming a voluntary activity then to reach out to those in need to redeem humiliation and provide respect as well as reconciliation. There was a wave of growing consciousness and people, who shared their experiences, received support and cooperation from relevant organizations. Shadows of ignorance were existent. Canada and its culture is an example of historical theft. Many indigenous communities have still not recovered from this dark history. The experiences of children in the residential schools chill the spine (Russell, Croker & Viner, 2019). Even after the government apologies, the scars are passed down via generations and takes immense time to heal. Sometimes they do not heal at all. Many European people who were settled in Canada had a notion that the indigenous people lack what they have. They assumed that since they were more civilized than the indigenous people were so they were superior to those communities whom...
