Reflection topic
You are asked to write your paper on a health care related topic of your choice. You must write about a healthcare related experience or encounter. This could be when you were the recipient of care or when you accompanied some to an appointment or were present in a healthcare encounter with another person such as a friend or family member (partner, parent, child). It can also be a volunteer, co-op, or work-related healthcare specific experience. It can be a positive or negative encounter. The topic should be something you can reflect on and learn from through the reflective process. If you are unsure about your topic or do not have such an experience, book an appointment with your professor to discuss options for your topic.
Reflection Explanation:
1. Reflection is a deliberate and conscious activity that permits learners to contemplate events and responses to these events that facilitate future action (Patterson, XXXXXXXXXXThis activity may be through writing and/or discussion.
1. Reflection helps you explore and process your experiences and gain a deeper understanding of your client’s lived experiences.
1. Personal reflections focus on your unique experience as a way of making meaning. Reflecting can help you make connections among theory, research and practice. Think of reflecting as critical thinking about your unique experience. As you reflect, you will encounter new insights, ideas and concepts.
1. During your classroom and practicum experiences you may be asked to reflect on and share your experiences. A reflective note allows you to think about your experiences to better understand your emotional reactions, thoughts about clients, impressions and the meaning and significance of the experience.
This is a place to share ideas. It will help the facilitato
mentor understand your thought processes and what you view as significant. Often a dialogue can develop where your facilitato
mentor will write back to you.
The act of writing about your experience with rich description including your ideas, thoughts, reactions, responses and meanings, immerses you again in the experience. Through writing you may more closely reflect on your learning by examining your values, beliefs, assumptions and point of view. Reflection on nursing practice extends your learning in a different time and place from your experience and helps prepare you for the self-assessment and self-direction requirement of membership in the nursing profession.
