Abstract
IHS or Indian Health Service (IHS) is operating body of U.S. Department of Health & Human
Service. It is responsible for offering public health services and medical services to the members of
ecognized Alaska Natives and Tribes who are recognized by federal government. It is the major
health advocate and healthcare provide for Indians. The goal of the organization is to raise the
health status of its population. It has 59 health centers, 33 hospitals, and 50 health stations
dedicated to Alaska Natives and American Indians. Established in 1955, IHS strives to improve
the health status of its population by offering them quality care. Cu
ently, the organization offers
its services to approx. 1.8 million Alaska Natives and American Indian belonging to 557 tribes
ecognized by federal government while the total population stands at 3.3 million. It caters to 35
US states and has an annual budget of approx. $4.3 billion (WHO, 2011).
Industry
There are numerous organizations that provide healthcare in the United States. Private
sector dominates healthcare in the country but federal organizations also have a great role to play
in improving the health status in the country. IHS is a federal agency engaged in offering services
to Alaska Natives as well as American Indians. In 2001, the United States was at fourth position
among the countries having highest level of spending per capita ($3,426) on health care. Most of
the population of the country below 65 is insured either by health insurance on their own,
