Play Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller is one of the most well-known play in the history receiving many awards like Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. This play represents perception of American Dream and Disillusionment such that it consumes the happiness of the family. Sweat on the other hand is also a well-acclaimed American play written by Zora Neale Hurston. Both the plays are extremely powerful as the characters evolves and shapes themselves as per the circumstance outside, which inspires the audience and questions their traditional thinking.
Theme shared by both the plays -
The theme that connects both the play is that people have to come to terms with realities of lives. Both the play has one key element that is in focus – women who blindly trusts her husband, treats him with respect but in return only gets mental stress and neglect. Well, indeed the play also centers on the power of dreams and how is it related to happiness as well as can be a source of tension. However, another striking theme that comes out in both the play is how women are treated and perceived to be submissive in relationship with her husband. Willy Lowman in the play Death of the Salesman wasn’t successful in his professional career and gave exotic gifts to his mistress. Similar stereotypical husband was portrayed by Sykes in Sweat, although being unemployed and being out of work yet he paid for his mistress's rent.
