Purpose of the Assignment: As we discussed in class, the rationale for a wellness program needs to 
be convincing. From a professional point of view, we need to be selective 
as we use examples of benefits to make a strong statement of need for 
workplace wellness programming.   
 
Overview of the Assignment: ? Source a benefit or savings from an internet source 
? Identify a benefit or savings to use that is: 
i. credible; 
ii. quantitative; and  
iii. can be attributed to a researcher or research institution.

Detailed Steps: A.  Find an example of a benefit to use as proof that workplace wellness 
programs provide cost savings or have cost benefits. The benefit must 
be found on a legitimate website of a company, organization, or 
government. 
 
B. The example must have a quantitative aspect - i.e. the XYZ Company 
was able to calculate a $2.00/person/day cost savings of those who were 
active in company-sponsored fitness programs compared to those who 
were not.  In comparison, if a report says employees felt better, had 
fewer sick days, etc. but doesn’t provide any quantitative data (numbers), 
it would not be useful for this assignment.

Find an example of a benefit 
A healthy workplace is very beneficial for the employees and hence for the employers. A 
healthy workplace can decrease the cost for the employers and hence increase the profitability, 
absenteeism rate would be lowered. For the employees, the efficiency increase and with the rise 
in motivation they are able to perform better. 
With the increase in the quality of the workplace, everyone would be benefitted, 
employees, employers and the complete industry.  
Quantitative aspect 
Cost of absenteeism is around $7.4 billion and if indirect costs are also added the cost 
would rise to $37 billion. Unhealthy workplace increases the stress by two to three times in the 
employees and hence the productivity decreases.
