Social Determinants of Health
1. In the last ten years, the number of child abuse and neglect cases has more than doubled in Australia. Families are socially isolated and find it hard to provide safe, loving environments for the well being of their children. Lack of any strong social network and any connection to extended family, neighbors and friends makes their children vulnerable and at high risk of neglect and abuse. It was a need to provide a safe environment for the children to grow. According to Australia’s Department of Child Protection, the country is going through absolute crisis of child abuse and neglect. Each 1 out of 4 children less than 10 year age is reported to child protection authorities for incredible concerns of abuse like undiagnosed mental health, domestic violence, sexual abuse, physical assault or a history of childhood trauma (Puddy, 2018).
2. In 2007 at Kalumburu an indigenous community of Australia was devastated when a number of young men were a
ested on charges of child sexual assault. There was a pain , confusion and shame in the community. Many of the people were themselves abused and faced severe atrocities. To help their community recover from trauma, the members contacted Professor Judy Atkinson and his healing circle from Ginibi College at Southern Cross University. With help of elders, they planned to restore the community so that it may foster care and support for everyone specially the children. According to ANROWS Landscapes (2015), The department of child protection WA, implemented East Kimberley Family Violence Hub and Outreach Services in 2010, at Kalumburu to reduce family violence, to provide safe spaces for victims, their families and children, to provide safety and facilitate positive behavior change in the indigenous community (Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women Safety [ANROWS],2015).

The members of Indigenous community contacted Professor Judy Atkinson and his healing circle with an aim to restore their community. Judy and her team organized several workshops designed with the assistance of elder men and women of the community, to restore the life and wellbeing of children and families. The Healing Circle provided the people safe places to come and discuss their feelings and stories with them. People feel safe joining the rebuilding program organized under the mango trees. The indigenous elders planned community rebuilding with the collaboration and partnership of ‘The Healing Circle’ which was supported by the government. They encouraged the people to tell their stories and listen to each other. The program was holistic and involved trauma recovery and healing for the people of all age groups: the grandmothers, aunties, children and young ladies. Through paintings, story maps and dancing activities, the program helped the people to find courage to describe their pain and then discover the hope for...
