1. Consequences of Medication Non-Adherence for Patients with Multiple Chronic Diseases
· Non-adherence of medication is intentional and unintentional failure to take prescribed medication
· Reduced the effectiveness of the treatment, often fatal for the patient
· It resulted into mo
idity and disability
· Three main consequences of medical non-adherence are clinical outcome of the patient, risk of hospitalisation and cost of treatment
The medication non-adherence can be defined as the intentional or unintentional failure of the patient to take the medication as prescribed. As mentioned by Nevins, Nickerson and Dew (2017), tt must be noted that failure in adherence of the medication can resulted in decrease in effectiveness of the treatment. This can result in worsening of the condition of the patient. This can be fatal for the patients suffering from multiple chronic diseases. As noted by Valgimigli et al. (2019), chronic diseases resulted in disability and mo
idity. It is necessary for the patient to adhere to the prescribed medication.
Failure to consume medication resulted into increase in vulnerability of patients towards disability and mo
idity. As stated by Cutler, Fernandez-Llimos, Frommer, Benrimoj and Garcia-Cardenas (2018), there are three folds of consequences of medication non-adherence such as clinical outcome of the patient, risk of hospitalisation and cost of treatment. This resulted in failure of the management of the chronic diseases. As suggested by Hommel et al. (2017), failure in the medical non-adherence results in failure in the treatment of the patient and lowers the clinical outcome. This makes the patient vulnerable to be hospitalised as multiple organs are influenced. Apart from this, it resulted in the impact of economic factors, as patient must bear the cost of treatment when initial treatment is failed (Smith et al., 2017).
2. Patient factors Which Affect Medication Adherence
· Many factors, which affect medication adherence is patient-centred factors, disease factor, therapy-related factors, healthcare factor and social and economic facto
· Elderly patients are highly vulnerable
· Patient factors involved lack of health literacy and lack of involvement in the treatment of the decision-making process
· Other factors include failure to fill or refill medication, lower or higher dosage of prescribed medication, stopping of medication early and taking of medication without prescription of doctors
There are various factors, which contributed towards the non-adherence of medication such as patient-centred factors, disease factor, therapy-related factors, healthcare factor and social and economic factor. As mentioned by Yap,...
