idity is Dementia. Dementia is found to be more prevalent in the older female population than the male population. It has also been found to increase with age. The rate of mortality due to Dementia has been on the rise in the recent years.
Dementia can be described as a condition that interferes with a person’s mental abilities like remembering, learning and thinking. Eventually it can also interfere with various activities in the life of a person, even basic ones. Even though dementia is known to increase with age, it is in way a natural part of ageing. Studies show that a range of conditions can result in dementia including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia which are the two major cause of dementia. Studies show that Australia cu
ently has as estimate of 245,400 people suffering from dementia. Dementia leads to very serious symptoms like lack of ability to perform even simple tasks like eating and bathing. Even though dementia is a condition that cant be cured, it can be managed with medication and care. Dementia constitutes a great burden on Australian economy as a health condition. Studies show that in 2018 alone, dementia cost Australia more than $15 billion. Around 52% of patients in residential aged care facilities suffer from dementia. In addition to this the government spends a lot of money on research and support for individuals with dementia (Brown, Hansnata, & La, 2017). Sicne it constitutes such a huge burden on the economy, it is important that necessary steps are taken to prevent as well as control dementia in Australia.
