Introduction
Leadership is the major driving force that is required to run any sector that is business, organisation or even healthcare. This is because every sector comprises of individuals or workers and only through the proper functioning of these workers any organisation can succeed and leadership plays a major role in directing the individuals towards their role in the sector. Healthcare is a very vast industry.
Therefore, leaders are required in almost every aspect that is from the stakeholders to the policy makers, from the managers to the healthcare service providers and from the healthcare teams to the healthcare consumers. An effective leadership is required in order to lead the team of specific individuals in order to provide the best consumer experience. This essay specifically highlights the need of effective leadership at every aspect of healthcare and the way leadership can affect the healthcare services received by consumer.
Importance of leadership in healthcare provision
Healthcare is one of the sectors under the hospitality industry where the main aim of the workers or the associated individuals is basically to provide services to the patients. Further, the individuals are not only abided by the federal rules and regulations but are also su
ounded by numerous ethical and professional standards that they have to meet and take care of. Therefore, as mentioned by Ba
and Dowding (2019), effective and targeted leaders are required by the healthcare industry in order to lead their team in accordance to all the health and safety standards and also in order to provide an effective service to the consumers.
Major leadership issues for individuals in healthcare
There are numerous issues persisting within the healthcare industry and the major identified rationale behind them is the lack of effective leadership. Since, there can be different levels within an organisation therefore, healthcare also provides with the hierarchical distribution of workers at every level and effective leadership is mandatory at every hierarchical level for the effective functioning of the organisation.
The most important and the top hierarchical level are being occupied by the stakeholders and the managers of this industry. As suggested by Scott, Mannion, Davies and Marshall (2018), overall functioning of the organisation depends upon the policies and the rules and regulations implied by the managers, policy makers and the stakeholders and if they possess the ability to develop strategic and time effective yet approachable policies outcome of the organisation is highly improved.
However, this is not the case as there are numerous factors that challenge the managers and the stakeholders time to time and as presented by Almost et al. (2016), one of the major challenges is lack of support from the co-workers. This is because the strategies and policies will prove effective only if the other supporting staff members follow them properly. Further, this requires the trust from the staff on the functioning and decision making of the managers.
Another major challenge is the lack of communication of policies from the managers to the staff members. It has been found that is there is no direct link between the managers and the staff members, most of the times information to be transfe
ed either is diluted or manipulated by the mediators. Further, this results in a completely different outcome then the one expected by the managers.
Moreover, most of the times managers are unaware of their duties and the aspects they have to follow, which reflects lack of academic as well and professional knowledge, which results into certain decisions, which do not get accepted by the staff. Supporting this with my personal experience with a hospital where I was assigned as a nurse under a physician and my job was to stand at the door and allow the entry and exit of patients along with providing their details. I complained to the healthcare manager of hospital in order to increase my
eak time from 30 minutes to 40 minutes because I had to stand during the 9 hour sift. The manager I refused, I argued that the doctors are getting extended
eaks but then also I was unheard and I had to resign from there. This reflects that the manager was not supporting their staff and was also unaware of his duties.
Major leadership issues for healthcare teams
Healthcare teams are the frontiers of these sectors since, they are responsible for providing the services to the consumers therefore, and effective leadership is required in order to coordinate with their functioning in order to provide best consumer services. One of the major challenges that are encountered among the healthcare teams is the management of the dynamic cultural diversity. Since, there are numerous employee and each them can belong to different culture and therefore may possess variable values, which may not be in accordance to the other workers. Therefore, team leaders have this vulnerable task...
